On the MIA instruments, yes -- the decal is applied over the lacquer top coat.

The MIM Classic Series and MIJ re-issues have their logos sealed with a clear coat.

Just curious. Is there anything applied over the decal for protection?

Cheers!

I don't think so.

I've seen peeling decals on older AVRI guitars (just as it might be with a true vintage instrument).

Thanks, Arjay.

I suppose it's all part of being faithful to the original but on the other hand I'm thinking there may be instances when exceptions could be made. ... Anyhow, that's for another thread.

If the surface mounted decals get damaged, a Fender Authorized Service Center can inspect the guitar to verify it's a real Fender then order replacement decals. When the decals arrive it'll take the shop about 5 minutes to remove the old ones and slide on the new ones (though they might keep the guitar overnight to let them dry fully). Fender wants their logos to look good so the repair is often free, but decals are cheap and there's not much labor so even if they charge you it's not exorbitant.

Surface mounted decals are obviously more fragile than under-the-finish decals, but there are lots and lots of '50s and '60s Fenders with intact original decals. If you don't get them soaking wet and avoid scratching them with hard sharp things they can last forever.

Be assured that the decal is applied and does not wear off unless specifically attacked I have owned though out the years numerous American reissues from 1982 to 1987 and have never had issue not to say it can not happen but.

+1...I have actually done this while working in an Authorized Fender Dealer who did minor Fender Authorized Repairs and we only charged for the decal...takes all of 10 minutes from start to finish! I have a couple of those genuine decals for just such repairs. I have an '82 '57 Vintage Reissue Strat and the decal that has been wrinkling a bit over the last 10 years or so, and when it gets to the point where it starts to flake off, I will pull one of those out and redo it.

The issue of replacement decals is answered in the Support section of this Website.

In it, Fender stresses the importance of verification, requiring you to take photos of the entire Guitar, the Headstock Decals, and if a stamped serial #, a pencil rubbing on paper of the serial number.

Then, you must bring these, along with the Guitar to an Auth. Repair Center. Once the Repair Center verifies the Guitar, the photos and pencil rubbing (if applicable) are sent to Fender by the Repair Center and the Decals sent back to them at no charge.

The Repair Center may, or may not charge a nominal fee for installation.

cheers!

The decals on my '63pre-CBS and '83 Vintage reissue strat are still good and solid after years of gigging both in the US and UK and not even showing a sign of lifting anywhere. However my 2007 AVRI ltd peeled and started to break up after 4 years. Fender US authorised a replacement after my sending emails and verification photos to them and it was replaced at the Crawley facility in Kent at the cost of a whopping £75.00. Good old rip-off UK. I left stunned!

I assumed this was a charge set by Fender so didn't query it. In retrospect I should have contacted Fender US and questioned this.

So before you have the work carried out enquire about the cost.
