I was debating about buying the American standard strat and the American Stratocaster Deluxe...The only differences i found were the SCN pickups, S-1 switching, and locking tuners. Do these modifications compliment the classic strat or diverge from it? If you own one please inform me about your opinions/ experiences. Thanks

i just got a fender american deluxe HSS strat montego black. it is bad $@!. it plays like a dream and feels perfect in my hands. at guitar shops i've played on both and i like the deluxe the best. it's got the same great tones as a regular american but with the S-1 switch you have twice as many. i personally love my deluxe and would recomend it to anyone looking for a new guitar.

i do appreciate the purity of stock stuff, having an older strat that sounded good but made a lot of noise when it was stock. and over the years it went through so many changes, the wood is the only thing stock on it any more. my wife gave me the deluxe ash for christmas 05 and i was blown away at the quality of this beauty. everything about it is sweet. and although the s1 and scn pickups dont have the same kind of balls say as the duncan hot rails on my '70s strat, it has unique qualities i can't get with any of my other guitars. the neck is faster than my gibsons. the tuners are smooth. the finish is flawless( i got the aged cherry sunburst). i cant say enough about how cool the am deluxe is. i find it in my hands more often than my other guitars and that says it all for me. i think the price difference is well worth it.

my 03 deluxe doesn't have the s1 switch, but it's a beautiful guitar, sounds great. what's not to like?

and yet, i spend most of my playing time on a 96 american standard. while it isn't as pretty as the deluxe, i prefer the thinner neck, and it just feels more comfortable...

'course, that said, i got a 02 highway 1 that's got it's points, too.

If this was a comparison between an American Deluxe and an American Series, then it would be more of an even playing field...

The question is which one to buy first.

The choice you may need to ask is true single coil pickups or SCN's. It's a tough choice. SCN's are very nice, but not true single coils. The other features of the deluxe are very nice, but maybe not the real deal maker or breaker. What a great choice to have to make.

Good luck.

Both are great guitars.
I just prefer the added options on the deluxe.

And the price was not that much different, I think it was an additional 300$ or 400$ Cdn. when I bought my deluxe.

When I set out to buy my new Strat I had concidered the MIM Deluxe Player's Strat, and the MIA Highway-1 and the American Standard guitars. Then the guitar which was to become mine caught eyes. It was the American Deluxe Strat in Vintage White with a solid MW neck. The fit and finish of this guitar is superb, even in comparison to the American Standard... most notable was the over-all neck it's self. It's a solid slab of wood with a skunk stripe, highly polished frets and nut and great action straight out of the box. The manufacturer's setup was exquisite. The SCN pups and S-1 affords a variety of tones which actually has a bit of a learning curve because of it's wide tonal range. The Fender/Schaller locking tuners are great and in conjunction with the American Deluxe Tremolo maintains tuning surprizingly well after series of divebombs. The snap in tremolo arm is another plus... I've cross threaded an earlier guitar I had in the '80s which froze the arm in position in the hole then eventually snapped off.

Hello Fender 1977,

I have an American Ash deluxe and its a grand guitar.
There is no hum, quiet as my sg but I do miss some
tonal qualities of the single coil so I'm in the market
for an American ash standard.

Cheers.
