Maple, Ebony, or Rosewood; which is the best? Also can I use the same fretboard cleaner for all three? Just really learning the technical stuff at this point... :?

It would be a matter of which do you prefer. I personally like Rosewood. Maple and Ebony seem a bit brighter sounding to me.

You can use the same cleaner on Rosewood and Ebony, Maple has a clear coat over it.

If you're talking about Fender Strat Standards, then you'll want a Maple Neck for the classic tone. It also looks better, I think. For Metal I tend to use a Rosewood Neck on my Ibanex RG350DX, but Maple is thinner and is only one piece. Rosewood is two pieces together.

All my strats are maple...not sure why... I can't even look at anything else... I guess it's an obsession?

Every time this comes up I answer the same--Ebony or rosewood--I like to feel the wood beneath my fingers--I get a better grip for bending and vibrato.

I'm a rosewood guy, too. Until I bought my current Strat, I didn't really know there was a difference beyond looks. But after playing a bunch of MIM Strats and Tele's I realized I just like the feel of rosewood better. Most likely that's because every guitar I ever owned happens to have a rosewood fretboard. But, yeah, maple doesn't feel "right" to me.

Back to the cleaning thing for a second, Big Grey: rosewood and ebony fingerboards are both naked, unfinished timber. You need to feed them with a drop of lemon oil to keep them from drying out - but honestly only a drop or two for a whole neck, and once or twice a year should be fine. A bottle of lemon oil from your local guitar shop should last most of your lifetime.

Originally, maple fingerboards were unfinished too, but Fender found they quickly got scuzzy and filthy looking, so ever since they have continued the finish right across the 'board. This can be part of what some players either like or hate about the feel of maple 'boards.

To keep a maple fingerboard clean you need to wipe it over, often as you like, with a silicone-free polish. You can buy that as a specialist instrument polish from a guitar store, but frankly a household furniture polish will be fine - so long as it is silicone free. Instrument finishes don't like silicone! You don't want one with an abrasive "cut", either, unless you want to slowly remove your finish...

Hope that helps.

In my very humble opinion, Fender means a maple 'board, but that's probably because I am 182 years old and remember the originals...
