Hi all,

I posted this in the Custom Shop section, but figured I'd post it here as well for anyone that is interested.

Just wanted to share a clip I recorded with my first custom shop guitar and my 1967 Super Reverb (which Retroverbial's wisdom selflessly guided me toward and helped me choose!).

http://soundcloud.com/tonewheelz/feel-your-love

For anyone that is interested The 1967 Super Reverb is stock (with the exception of a few caps and tubes) with CTS speakers. I recorded it with a SM 57 and an AKG 420 perception at a volume of about 3 1/2.

Image

The guitar is a Custom Shop 1968 Strat with 7 1/4" fingerboard radius and vintage fretwire. Despite everywhere I've read of the difficulty of string bending and notes sqeaking out on bends, with proper setup, this guitar is just as easy if not easier to bend notes on than any 9 1/2" radius fingerboard with medium-jumbo or tall-narrow fretwire guitar i've ever played. And the sustain hasn't been an issue whatsoever. To anyone who has doubts of apprehensions about vintage specs such as fingerboard radius or fretwire...don't listen to the myths! If set up properly, it rings like a bell and is a joy to play. Chording couldn't be more comfortable either. And I love the vintage nut width & string spacing!

Another funny thing, the guitar is maple capped neck with ash body, and it is much darker and warmer sounding than my Rosewood & Alder 1999 American standard. I attribute it, of course, to the pickups. I just always see endless threads debating the difference in tone the wood makes when it seems pickups and amps make way more difference on an electric guitar

As far as effects, I'm just using three. A delay pedal, and Dirty Little Secret MKII into an OCD pedal. Yes, I know the Dirty Little Secret should, in theory, be last in the chain, but I found that driving the DSL into the OCD tames some of the piercing highs when using the bridge pickup. It sounds crunchier and almost tonally harmonic that way too, and also seems to keep the 60's pickups in the guitar a bit brighter at lower volume. (the vintage style pickups seem to get a bit dull when rolling back the volume normally)

Anyway, here is the guitar in question.

With all that being said, I whole heartedly recommend that anyone who can, invest in some good amplifiers. They really make all the difference in the world. The warmth, response, and overall organic feeling of the old tube amps are everything that everyone says it is. I can't say that a Custom Shop guitar is $???? worth more than a squier, MIM or American Standard in terms of value and sound. I think the Super Reverb can probably make any of those guitars sound like heaven. I will say, though, that the playability and comfort afforded by custom specifications after knowing what it is exactly that I want in a guitar in terms of playability...that alone was worth it for me. Thanks for looking and listening!

WHAT one earth is the finish on your strat?! She's a looker, for sure!

Great playing and tone, sir. I agree that 7.5" radius is awesome. It's what I find most comfortable. Bends and sustain really are all in the fingers, anyway.

I totally see the light :::runs up and down aisle:::

That is a SWEET clip of pure unadulterated Fender tone! Love the clean and slick chops you got on that clip. That's one of my favorite backing tracks to play along to as well! Thanks for listening and sharing a clip of that beauty!

Thank you so much! The strat is finished in ebony transparent burst, I believe. I liked it because it's kinda new, yet kinda traditional at the same time.
