Loaded question on here...

Here's what I have learned... Most American Stratocaster's are three piece bodies with a vaneer added to the top of burst models. Most Mexican Stratocaster's are four or five peice. Recent video on YouTube proved this.

American Standard Strats have a micro tilt adjustment in the heel on the neck. American Standards have 22 frets, slightly wider nut, staggered tuners, custom shop fat 50's pickups, no load tone control, and two point tremolo.

Mexican Standards Strats have 21 frets, standard single coils, vintage six point tremolo, and smaller mass tremolo block...

As to which is better? Americans usually have a better initial factory quality, but in the hands of a good guitar luthier, Mexicans are fine guitars.

The only thing I learned from another post is that MIM guitar bodies are assembled with multiple pieces of wood whereas MIA's are one solid body made from one single piece of wood.

If you look @ the factory tour pics and videos you can clearly see this. This would undoubtedly affect tone IMO but to a beginner such as myself I would never know the difference.

A while back when I bought my first guitar I played a bunch of MIM tele's and then one MIA tele. I hated the MIA, sounded empty and weak. Decided to go with the MIM tele and I love it. No problems, and very well crafted. Sounds fantastic IMO but again what do I know.

I'll be receiving a MIA strat in the mail some time soon and so will let you know the quality of sound between it and my current MIM tele, since everyone else already listed like everything else thats differen't between the two guitars.

I'd say for your FIRST guitar, make sure you like it when you buy it. I have so much respect for my guitar and I love it so much and take such good care of it that it makes me want to play for hours upon hours every day and I do so. This progressed my skill development much faster than normal and you'll find yourself happy with your progress! I don't think I'd be playing as much if I thought my guitar was ugly, bad, poorly crafted, junky, tacky, sounded bad, or felt bad.

Cheers!

Nick

Well then I feel equally bad for you, that you spend more, just to feel you got something expensive, and therefore 'obviously' better.

Never said that your putting words in my mouth not cool :/ I just prefer Americans due to the quality and parts ect that go into them they are without a doubt superior to the Mexicans , have you ever even extensively play an American strat ?? I doubt you have to voice such an erroneous statement haha

There is undoubtedly a huge difference between my MIM blacktop, I had to gut it to make it playable, and my MIA American special and Standard. Also between the special and standard but less so. The standard was tune n go out of the box, floating bridge and all, and it's friggin heavy, almost heavier than my LP.
There is also a huge difference between my Gibson LP and an Epiphone.
Anybody that doesn't believe is fooling themselves. But as long as you're happy.

Yeah Im with everybody here Mexican strats are ok.
They are nice parts the body is ok but the paint is a bit brittle like the import Jacksons.
Mexicans usually have poor pickups the singles are needing replaced and the Humbuckers are usually the standard 8 ohm or chinese like Blacktop ones.
The 6 point tremolos are not desirable next to todays.
The necks are ok the blacktops are the best with 22 frets but the frets are made in china.
They wear out quicker especially with a heavy handed player.

If you want a good Mexican stratocaster here is the recipe

1 blacktop 22 fret neck add locking tuners
1 standard body
3 pickups of choice (fat 50s, texas special, CS 69s etc)
1 blade runner tremolo

This will rival any american made.
Or... Buy a special or how bout a good used American Standard?
Now that guitar will last and serve a lifetime and when your done...
Leave it under your bed when you die so the grandkids can find it.

:)

I wonder what is the difference between the guitars manufactured in Mexico and the guitars manufactured in the United States.
I want to know everything about the guitars and i want to know whats your favourite.

Walked into a guitar shop in Portland, OR. First thing I grabbed, a MIM Strat. First thing I did, bend the 'B' string,*pop* the 'G' string pops out the nut.

...

Asked the store clerk what was up, his response, "QC on MIM is poor".

Picked up another MIM - poor action.

Picked up an American Standard. The difference was night and day. Picked up a Deluxe and it was better than the Standard - mostly because of the compound radius neck.

To be honest, one of the things that you are shelling out more money for is QC. Guitars are built quickly on an assembly line, the more time it takes to build and inspect one the more that cost is pushed down to you, the consumer. You could find a MIM strat that plays as well as a MIA but your odds are just that, a potential string popping out a nut or poor action, to a lucky specimen of MIM strat that plays superbly. It would likely take many trips to many different shops and then I would suggest finding ones on Craiglist too. A MIM Strat on CL usually goes for $250 - $350. Many of these are just as good as buying one in a shop, as the owner bought it and stopped playing after a month.

As a new player, a poor guitar can be your biggest adversary. If you don't enjoy playing a guitar you bought because it's cheap, you'll be less enthusiastic about picking it up and playing.

One of the things that keeps me playing is that Deluxe strat went home with me. Her names Darla and I'm pretty sure she's a lesbian as she likes to talk about women with big butts. Sometimes I don't even feel like playing, I just can't keep my fingers off her fretboard.

Good luck and if you decide to do a MIM - play A LOT of them in many different shops. Find the one you Ike th best. Play every note, listen for buzz, bend strings, use the tremolo, ask for a tuner, see if it stays in tune after playing it for 15 minutes or so.

Pickups can be replaced - the way the guitar plays is most important IMO. Good luck!

Sounds more like a crappy shop trying to sucker you into spending more on an American Strat. The shop should of set up the guitars prior to being on the floor. G string shouldn't pop out at all if the guitar is setup right. The action shouldn't be like that either.

I kinda got the same vibe when I read that.
Its either exaggerated or the shop just sucks.

This really hurts to read this article, because everyone has different requirements and different priorities, some will want the best to happen while some will want to just have fun, and each other will have maybe not the same means.
What counts for me, player strat anonymous is to have the guitar that suits me, and those who listen to me, laugh at the origin of my guitar, they listen to music and aprécient, c is all that matters to me!
We have not quite what oppose each other, without involving our Strat?

I've owned several of both Strats – American (both Beck models, a 50th Anniversary Strat and a 1972 Strat) and three MIMs. A difference I noted was tone, which always seemed harsher on the MIM pickups; but then I don't much like the staggered pole-piece pickups (USA and MIM) because they give a G string much more volume than B and E, for my ears. Hendrix slipped around this problem without even trying... I've had Strats from both countries with various Lace Sensors, Noiseless and the SCNs, and in the end I like the Lace Sensors most, as did Clapton and Beck on their first signature models. All the American Strats were very well finished, while an older MIM was not, with an irregular cut nut and frets not so well dressed. But a 2011 MIM I chose is faultess, beautifully finished all over and plays like a dream. They say the MIM bodies are made from more bits of wood, but there are no ripples in the paint on this MIM, while the 2nd Beck actually had faint ripples showing the join. But so what! After playing the Noiseless Beck 2 and the MIM with three Laces side by side for a week, I sold the Beck... and with the saving bought a nice used Gibson 135.
