first time somebody is asking this I think :)
(I was wondering the same before, as so many of us will have)

my opinion :

-in general, an american made fender will be better quality, note I said "in general"
-a high end mexican can be better then an american low end.
-a guitar that costs 2x the price of another guitar, isn't by definition 2 times better
-in every price range & between every model there are differences, what do you like ?
-the upgrades on american strats are not aways crucial
-like in every product "quality" is different from "best value for the money"
-in doubt, the vanilla yogurt is the best
-in general : if you are asking this question, start with a mexican strat
-best value for the money : mexican "classic player" (not series) strat. (opinion, not a fact)
-whatever guitar you will buy in the pricerange of "mexican" - "american" (somewhere in between) should be a good guitar
-mexican fender guitars fit better with sombreros
-it's not because your favorite guitar player is player with expensive guitars, that less expensive guitars are rubbish, a lot of them are sponsored.
-go buy a guitar NOW and post pictures, you will be happy.
- I said NOW

I have owned several MIA Strats since the early 70's, now, I have a 92 and 01 MIM, a 95 "68 Reissue" (5 pos switch) MIJ, and a 72 MIA that I have been playing since 78 - I wish I could play all of them at the same time - they all call out to me - each has it's own feel and I get what I want from all of them - there is a difference in the quality of the MIM's but a good set up will clean up the bugs if the tech knows what he is doing....the MIJ had very thin sounding pups so I replaced them with vintage ones and it sounds great. I use the original pickups on the MIM's, they don't sound "classic" but I like them anyway.

You can get good or bad guitars in any line. A good Mexican Fender will beat a mediocre American Fender. The Mexican Strats and Teles are a very good deal for what you get. The American Strats might be 10% better but cost twice as much.

This may have a clearer answer- how does a used American Fender Strat compare with a new Mexican Fender Strat?

When I asked my instructor about buying a Fender Strat, he told me the 22nd fret is essential if I am playing metal (he used to play in a thrash metal band) but if it's only 21, I should quit playing metal. For folks who love to play lead all the way up there, Mexican Strats other than the Blacktop may not be such a good idea.

Since I'm in a location where I can't try before I buy, I'd say the more high-end the guitar, the more assured you are of quality. I am rather apprehensive about Mexican Strats when I read about up-and-down fretwork, since there are often no more than two Mexi Strats in shops in the whole city.

markara - The Standard American Strat already has shielding from the factory. So that will save you a bit of work. It's been a part of the US made Stratocaster since at least 1986-87.

A fairly long, but honest review of the various "levels" of Fender guitars.

They don't cover absolutely everything, but there is enough there to help people really understand the differences.

He's a good teacher, and has the results to prove it (plenty of students have recorded and performed abroad), unlike other teachers across the city. He just happens to be endorsed by ESP, and doesn't know much about Fender.

It's not as laughable as that "Mexican strats are made from rejected American wood" statement by an Am Strat owner, or the importance of 24 frets by that luthier/salesman from Nevada.

I'm still more comfortable on 22 frets, and doing some solos (like Take It On The Run by REO Speedwagon), I need that 22nd fret (hang on, that song actually needs 24) to pull it off neatly. Besides, some of the big name metal lead guitarists with 21-fret Strats have some 24-fret instruments as backup, for these licks.

honestly the mexican is a good instument especially for the price good for a first guitar but i have to say the american is way better they feel so different the mexican neck is a bit thicker and seems to have a different finnish on the back of the neck as far as the electronics go the amarican is of a way higher standard being that i own a 2010 american standard and i play it so much i can pick the feel out anywhere anytime its basically my go to guitar so when i played the mexican i could instantly feel and hear the diference just my opinion on the matter it really pisses me off when people say there the same and the only difference is one says made in america...

Some people simply can't hear or feel a difference. Our wallets love us the more for it. Maybe that's what pisses you off?

Well then I feel equally bad for you, that you spend more, just to feel you got something expensive, and therefore 'obviously' better.
