Hi everyone... I had a guy tell me that he upgraded his pickups on his strat to OSP pickups. Anyone know what that stands for or means? Thanks.

I was thinking he might have been talking about the original strat pickups, maybe like the vintage set? I don't know. Just curious if this was common terminology.

Common terminology is as common as how many strats are out there.....
It's next to impossible to pinpoint what someone is refering to when they use a generic term such as would be OSP ( original strat pickups ) as in a 2012 Strat or a Reissue 70's or a 50's or.... :?:

Too many people out there immediately blame their guitars pickups for not delivering that sound...whatever that may be...But in most recorded music scenario's, it's actually a quite simple setup of a stock Stratocaster run through a small ( 15 to 25 watts ) amp cranked to 11.....
No bells or whistles just a simple recording of a signal pushed thru a maxed out, distorted valve/tube amp.
Dismissing the other 50% of the equation as in the quality of amp, the quality of the cord and the most important which is actually being able to get the sounds that you want from your fingers, is the other part of this....

While I don't actually debate this sentiment in and of itself, I have to say that I think it seriously under-values the importance of pickups as well. To provide a specific example, I have an '96 MIM loaded with Duncans, an '85 MIJ loaded with Fender VN's and my most recent acquisition, an '09 Squier Affinity Tele. All three of these instruments have unique and individual "voices". While some of this can be attributed to the specific materials, time frames, etc., that these instruments were made, the single greatest factor in that sound is the pickups.

Seriously - Anyone who doubts that pickups make a SIGNIFICANT difference, needs but to slap a set of Duncans in an older stock MIM...day and night here people.

Wow...so for folks like David Gilmore and Jeff Beck and such, all that flange and delay and such (not to mention wah pedals) is added exclusively in post or mastering? We're really supposed to believe this? Hell, even Stevie Ray Vaughn was known for using full sized Fender amps for recording (Vibratone's as I recall for a while there)! And gee...what about folks like George Harrison, who plugged straight into the mixing board (i.e. the intro to "Revolution" by The Beatles)? And tube amps are the only thing people record through?? No one's ever used a solid state (I thought BB King played thru L5's)? Wow.....

Your comments seem to insinuate that there's only one "right" way to record...and MANY people over the years have proven this simply is NOT true. Personal opinions aside, you seem to be providing some serious mis-information there... Sure some folks do it that way, but by no means a majority, let alone "most recorded scenarios" I'm sure.

That I will actually agree with.

These are, as always, just my own personal opinions...please treat them as such.
