if you're looking for those long ringing Santana-like notes, then ya need a compressor...I'd recommend the Boss units, but that's just a personal preference.

I've also heard santana would start a note with his volume down a tad, then dial it up as the output of the note faded to make it sustain longer. But that sounds tricky and who knows if he actually does that.

I had recorded Santana "Multidimensional Warrior" on HDNET weeks ago. Just got around to watching it.

I tried to watch for him doing that and I did not see that he did. Of course, when watching a video you are at the mercy of the cameraman but he did show Carlos a couple times on a sustained not (I think it was Europa) and I didn't catch him adjusting volume.

I had asked a local luthier about boosting sustain, and he said it's not so much the bridge (Standard/Vintage/Floyd/Kahler/SuperV), but the springs used on the bridge that boost sustain. His idea is to put relatively expensive strings on a simple bridge, and it will work. Has anyone thought of that, and tried it?

Another solution I had found was in the pickups itself, as some sustain longer. A Strat owner told me the DiMarzio Fast Track sustains longer than regular Strat pickups. Then there's the idea of using the amp itself.
