Actually I have never seen any measurements with stock guitar types. Maybe a better question would be is unassisted sustain really important to guitar playing. How long do you really want to hold a single note?

^ this.

A fixed bridge may have more sustain than a floating bridge... It all depends on the guitar and the quality of the bridge. With a standard Fender type v-trem, I'm sure a trem block would help increase resonance. Would that actually matter if you're playing? Unlikely.

I've used my guitars both ways, and am currently set up for a full floating bridge. I've never noticed much of a difference in sustain, if any, between the two setups.

+1, but I have 5 out of 7 strats adjusted to be fixed now (for other reasons than sustain)

If you want infinite sustain, get a Jackson with Sustainiac!

There´s a sustain knob on every amp, it´s called master volume

Cheers,
Robin

This is just my $.02 worth so please take it as such...

I've ran my Strats over the years with various bridge configs...free floating, half blocked, full blocked, etc., and personally while there -is- a difference, I never thought it was terribly significant at all. Now a days I just set up all my Strats for free floating.

Now that said, the two main issues that I find that will help improve the sustain of a Strat is the trem block and...well...a decent compressor pedal. I have 2 MIM's for example (among others) and I replaced the cheapy little zinc blocks on both, one with steel, one with brass and the difference there with the sustain was pretty significant...albeit more so with the steel. If you're using an older MIM or a Squire or something, the first thing I'd do is dump $20 over at Guitar Fetish and replace the trem block. If that's still not enough for ya...if you're looking for those long ringing Santana-like notes, then ya need a compressor...I'd recommend the Boss units, but that's just a personal preference.

Also...
Just a quicky...check your pickup height too. Not pointing fingers at anyone, but a lot of folks like to jack up those pickups really close to the strings to increase the output...but the closer those magnets get to the strings, the more the magnetic pull on those steel strings kills the sustain.

Again, just my $.02 worth...enjoy!
Jim

...or order yourself a Jackson Dinky or a Phil Collen signature model. These guitars deliver the infinite sustain you're craving for.

I've also heard santana would start a note with his volume down a tad, then dial it up as the output of the note faded to make it sustain longer. But that sounds tricky and who knows if he actually does that.
