Hi guys! I need your help with wiring my strat. I saw a lot of schemes, but they are not fill to my switch. It's pretty standart 5-way switch as here
http://support.fender.com/service_diagr ... 1_SISD.pdf
and usually schemes for switch like this
http://guitarwiring.blogspot.com/2010/1 ... strat.html

Anyway, I got my strat with Seymour Duncan TB-4 on board and 2 SCN pickups with 3 wires - black/green/white for neck and black/green/yellow for middle. SD TB-4 sounds great, but wiring isn't correct.

So what I want.
1) Push-pull volume splits bridge coil
2) Change Middle tone controller to bridge (as Eric Johnson?)
3) Change Neck tone controller to Neck + Middle tone
this is my main goal

Also I'm interested in David Gilmour style wiring of his strat. Especially with add-neck-to-bridge coil feature
http://guitarwiring.blogspot.com/2010/1 ... strat.html

I don't want to drill a hole in my pickguard. I've heard about "weird" Gretch style switch for position 3 = Bridge (split coil) & Neck (in series, out of phase, tone cap) - is it same thing?
Well I don't need exactly phase-thing, but just bridge+neck variant as Gilmour has.
So my theme is close to this request
viewtopic.php?f=18&t=70399

Ideally, I'd like to have this settings:

Push-pull Off
1 - Bridge (split coil)
2 - Bridge (split coil) & Middle (in parallel)
3 - Middle
4 - Middle & Neck (in parallel)
5 - Neck

Push-Pull On

1 - Bridge (full HB)
2 - Bridge (split coil) & Middle (in series)
3 - Bridge (full HB or split coil - I don't know what would be better, ideally I would try both variants) & Neck
4 - Middle & Neck (in series)
5 - Neck

It would be great for me and someone else to have a similar variant, but
Push-pull Off
1 - Bridge (Full HB)
...
Push-Pull On
1 - Bridge (split coil)
...

need your help :)

P.S. What's the difference between "in parallel" and "in series"
for cases
2 - Bridge & Middle (in parallel)
2 - Bridge & Middle (in series)
is it makes sence for SCN pickups?
what would be better for bridge + neck option for tb-4 + scn?

Howdy!

There are others here that can explain Series and Parallel wiring far better than I can so I'll leave that to them.

But I do like a good wiring challenge! I have a few questions before I go any further.

Can you confirm that your Strat is wired as per the first diagram you posted a link to (with the Super Switch and the S-1)?

Andy

Thanks Andy for your help!

Well I'm sure I have S1 and Super-Switch :)
And my wiring for bridge pickup is
black wire to blue 5 (remember your diagram for super-switch? :) )
green and red to yellow 2
so as I can see it's not... fender's diagram is pretty unreadable for me :(

now my modes are:
S1 Off
1 - Bridge (full HB)
2 - Bridge (full HB) & Middle (i don't know par or ser)
3 - Middle
4 - Middle & Neck (same thing)
5 - Neck

S1 On
1 - Bridge (full HB again :) )
2 - Middle :)
3 - again middle :)
4 - Middle & Neck (same thing)
5 - Neck

p.s. one more questions
Is it possible to switch phases for bridge+middle, middle+neck, bridge+neck with a simple button?)
it would be a great mod :) and also useful for someone, maybe I'll try it later...

p.s.2
you're right andy - building diagrams is quite interesting :)
and I've read one of your posts
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=46935&start=30

it would be great to have a scheme that shows how super-switch works in pair with S1
maybe also how it works with simple single coils, noiseless SCN and 4wired humbs (SD and DiMarzio).

p.s.3 I think if you'll make something like this and put all your schemes together it would be a great tutorial! :D "Wiring strat for dummies" from Andy :)

p.s.4 any interesting options for Push-Pull On 5 - Neck ? Maybe all 3 pickups or something else?
Are any other interesting mods possible? for example I heard about switching-button to additional capacicator to the chain... is it useful?

I've founded this article about s1
http://www.premierguitar.com/Magazine/I ... ystem.aspx

Is black dotes on diagram used for working in both variants of s1 condition (on and off)?

One more useful for someone :) article (see about wiring and colors for DiMarzio, Seymour Duncan etc. here)

Howdy!

Super Switch and S-1. My favourite. Cool Beans!

Regarding your Strat....

Next thing you need to do is make a final decision regarding what pickup combinations your after. You have requested a few different options and to be honest, I can only really help once you know what your after. I'm sure you can appreciate it can take a while to work it all out then make it in to a pretty diagram.

I'm assuming you know how to solder and can cleanly remove your existing wiring so the relevant components can be reused.

You can do a lot with the Super Switch and an S-1.

For example: I'm pretty sure (but not 100% yet) I can draw up a diagram for this:

1 - Bridge (split coil)
2 - Bridge (split coil) & Middle (in parallel)
3 - Middle
4 - Middle & Neck (in parallel)
5 - Neck

Push-Pull On

1 - Bridge (full HB)
2 - Bridge (split coil) & Middle (in series)
3 - Bridge (full HB or split coil - I don't know what would be better, ideally I would try both variants) & Neck
4 - Middle & Neck (in series)
5 - Neck

But you'd need to make a final decision for position 3. I can do either but not both (without adding another push pull pot).

Have a think about it and let us know. Then I can get stuck in and see if its possible or not. :D

BTW:It would take me a very long time to write a wiring how to. I'm seriously crap at explaining things (I have mild dyslexia) and much prefer to take someone's request and draw a diagram for them! Also, I'm just a geeky hobbyist who likes to tackle the odd wiring challenge in his spare time... when I have some spare time!

Cheers!

Andy

Well, as for me, it would be great something like this

Push-pull Off ("Standart Strat mod")
1 - Bridge (split coil)
2 - Bridge (split coil) & Middle (in parallel)
3 - Middle
4 - Middle & Neck (in parallel)
5 - Neck

Push-Pull On

1 - Bridge (full HB)
2 - Bridge (split coil) & Middle (in series)
3 - Neck+middle+bridge (single coil)
4 - Middle & Neck (in series)
5 - Bridge (split coil) & Neck (as I've found Gilmour use parallel type)

1 tone (in the middle) for neck and middle pickup
2 tone (on the bottom) for bridge

and if it's possible :) if you like to create diagrams
you could figure out all our variants... they are pretty close to each other
and if editing of main variant is easy for you...
or you could simply to leave a note how to, for example, switch
variant 1
Push-pull Off
1 - Bridge (split coil)
Push-Pull On
1 - Bridge (full HB)

to
variant 2
Push-pull Off
1 - Bridge (full HB)
Push-Pull On
1 - Bridge (split coil)

So everyone could choose what is useful for him... or her :)
for example "to get this effect you need to connect
bridge black wire to red 5
bridge green wire..." and so on (using your super-switch diagram)
and if my single coil humb pickup would be too noisy, I'll switch wiring to 2nd variant...
same thing about
Push-Pull On 3 - Neck+middle+bridge (single coil)
switch to
Push-Pull On 3 - Neck+middle+bridge (full HB)

I think it also would be great to call wires north/south start/finish for additional versatility (people could use your wiring diagram with my case for any pickup they have)

Do you know single-coil tb-4 would be noiseless?
and please make a diagram describing s1 and super-switch work in pair if you'll have a bit of freetime...
your super-switch diagram is great :!:

What about phase-changing button? Or it's impossible with simply one button?

Hehehe!

Dude! Its a pretty big ask for a hobbyist and will take a little while!

I do have a few sketches but its making it look pretty and working out how to present it with a good, easy to understand explanation that take the time for me. I also really need to have my head in wiring mode to tackle it properly.

I'm honestly not sure if a thread on the relationship between the S-1 and a Super switch is the right way to look at it. I might do a break down of Fenders pre 2010 Dlx wiring which I think may be more useful. I might not.

Again I honestly don't think I'm the best source for that level of detailed Info on the web. There are plenty out there who do this sort of stuff for a everyday and I don't! I really want to avoid mis-informing people.

As I understand, it won't be as quiet as the Humbucker was but, as there's still a tiny bit of the signal bleeding through the other coil (even when split) you may still retain "some" humbucking qualities to varying degrees.

well, now I'm trying by my own to figure out how to make this type of connection

Push-pull Off ("Standart Strat mod")
1 - Bridge (split coil North)
2 - Bridge (split coil North) & Middle (in parallel)
3 - Middle
4 - Middle & Neck (in parallel)
5 - Neck

Push-Pull On

1 - Bridge (full HB Hot output, coils in series - "standard" style)
2 - Bridge (split coil North) & Middle (in series)
3 - Bridge (full HB Cold output, coils in parallel - "vintage" style)
4 - Bridge (split coil South) & Neck (in series) (as for me it would be more interesting that Middle & Neck (in series) variant )
5 - Bridge (split coil South) & Neck (as I've found Gilmour use parallel type)

is my splitting for north (nearest to neck) and south (to bridge) proper for noise cancelling?
neck pickup should be north type and middle - south, right? is it true for scn pickups?

Howdy!

Quick question... What's the difference between "Standard" and "Vintage" outputs? Not sure I get what you mean there.

Thanks in advance! :D

oh, now I see a mistake there, Andy

this division isn't "official" :)
but I've read it a few times...
well, standard (modern) style is a serial linking of two coils of one humbucker - more agressive and compressed tone - hotter output
vintage - parallel linking - strat-like tone - colder output

well, as more I go deeper as more it's all get more complicated :)

As I've understood, my latest scheme with vintage and modern styles isn't possible only with a "s1 - super switch" combination... But maybe it is :)
Now I'm trying to figure out another variants...

Meanwhile :) I'm also thinking about this:
1) I have a SCN pickups and they are kind of "two coils of humbucker in parallel", right? Or in series. It doesn't matter for one fact - they are still humbuckers and it doesn't matter what coil (North/South) of bridge humbucker you put with it (but I could be wrong).

In this case it's not necessery to join
neck (North single pickup) with South of bridge
middle (South single pickup) with North of bridge
for hum cancelling.
North and south of bridge sounds a little bit different, but
if you don't want to put additional switch to your pickguard you should
pick just one coil for joining to both middle and neck pickup.

I'm not sure, but there still could be a hum. In the case you should join to middle and neck pickups bridge with coils in parallel for strat-like tone...
(This thoughts are about positions Bridge+Neck and Bridge+Middle).

2) what would be really interesting?
as I imagine :D It's a switch for bridge modes - 1) Hot (coils in series) 2) Cold (coils in parallel) 3) One splitted coil
I think 3-position on/on/on switch would be useful for it.
So you could choose what type of bridge signal to send for super-switch...
and then

Push-pull Off
1 - Bridge (*parallel/splitted coil/series with additional on/on/on switch)
http://www.erikzmusic.com/guitarsetup800.jpg
2 - Bridge (*) & Middle (in parallel)
3 - Middle
4 - Middle & Neck (in parallel)
5 - Neck

Push-Pull On

1 - Bridge (*) & Neck (in series)
2 - Bridge (*) & Middle (in series)
3 - All 3 in parallel (but it's pretty useless as for me) or Bridge (*) & Neck (in parallel, reverse phase and then all scheme without switch for phase switching)
4 - Middle & Neck (in series)
5 - Bridge (*) & Neck (in parallel)

and the phase switching between neck-bridge(with additional on/on switch)
http://www.guitarelectronics.com/produc ... Phase.html

but... I'm not sure, that you can switch phase for SCN pickups...

Any thoughts?

Hi Andy! Thanks for taking up the challenge!
Do you think it's possible to do adding only one on/on/on switch?

Push-pull Off
1 - Bridge (*parallel/splitted coil/series with additional on/on/on switch)
http://www.erikzmusic.com/guitarsetup800.jpg
2 - Bridge (*) & Middle (in parallel)
3 - Middle
4 - Middle & Neck (in parallel)
5 - Neck

Push-Pull On

1 - Bridge (*) & Neck (in parallel)
2 - Bridge (*) & Middle (in series)
3 - Bridge (*) & Neck (in parallel, reverse phase)
4 - Middle & Neck (in series)
5 - Bridge (*) & Neck (in series)

also I want to ask
What could I get without adding switch?
In this case I wish I have for Push-pull Off Bridge parallel or splitted (parallel would be more required)
and Push-pull On any possible variant (because we don't have eternally lot of switches)

1 - Bridge (series) & Neck (in parallel)
2 - Bridge (parallel) & Middle (in series)
3 - Bridge (parallel) & Neck (in parallel, reverse phase)
4 - Middle & Neck (in series)
5 - Bridge (parallel) & Neck (in series)

1 - Bridge (parallel) & Neck (in parallel)
2 - Bridge (parallel) & Middle (in series)
3 - Bridge (parallel) & Neck (in parallel, reverse phase)
4 - Middle & Neck (in series)
5 - Bridge (parallel) & Neck (in series)

1 - Bridge (series)
2 - Bridge (parallel) & Middle (in series)
3 - Bridge (parallel) & Neck (in parallel, reverse phase)
4 - Middle & Neck (in series)
5 - Bridge (parallel) & Neck (in parallel)
