Jazzmaster is "fatter", expecially with a Jazzmaster with humbuckers.

Fender has a 5-switch pickup-control
that will deliver 5 different options for tones,
plus tone controls and the pedals & speakers & amp
all contribute to the Stratocaster tone.

Can you name a "song" that has your version or illusion of a "Stratocaster" tone?
Your thinking and my thinking will be different.

Think Buddy Holly's "Maybe Baby" or "That'll Be The Day"

Think Blackmore, Hendrix, Clapton, SRV, David Byrne, David Gilmour.

What are YOU THINKING????

Of course. It does not get much brighter than the Telecaster and the Stratocaster.

It's a classic question and Toppscores referenced examples are typical of the range of possiblities with the Stratocaster because there's more than a decade of evolution in that guitar between Holly and Hendrix. IMHO Holly defines the Stratocaster as I knew it in my 'teens. There were no 'gadgets' to modify tone back then. We were pretty much playing clean through simpler amplification. I remember the first Jazzmasters and Jaguars. [I acquired my '58 Strat and Concert amp from my bandmate and still long time friend when he bought his '62 Jaguar and Dual Showman amp first year out.

]Think "The Ventures" as the seminal tone for that guitar. By then Fender is moving into the Dual Showman era for amps and things are changing.

See if you can find some vintage Buddy Merrill and Neil Levang of Lawrence Welk fame on YouTube for a taste of Strats and JM's with a clean tone.

Let us know what you think.

I remember when the Fender website used to have sound files of all of the guitars they made.

You could click on them and get a taste of what each one sounded like.

This is why 'old guys rule' :!: 8) Now I probably saw both those broadcasts because I used to watch Welk just to watch these guys play.[ Note that Levang's guitar does not have the anodized pickguard. That came and went in a flash. ] For those of you too old to remember, Buddy was drafted into the Army for the usual two year tour. Welk had a series of guest guitar players filling in and ultimately Levang got the steady gig. When Buddy returned, Welk kept Levang on board as well.

A one and a two and a three.... Yeah, I remember. Was that the McGuire Sisters on there? Or maybe they were on Arthur Godfrey. Wait, wait, The Lennon Sisters!!

Old brains never die. Just saw a rendition of "One Toke Over The Line" Dick Dale and Gail Farrell on Lawrence Welk. Not the "modern spiritual" that Welk described it as.

Really, is there an actual classic Stratocaster tone?
or are there many classic Stratocaster tones?

Sure there is a classical Strat tone.... I remember my first Strat, which was a 1968. I not only loved the 3 selections but thought it so cool to get the switch in between 5 & 3 and get the coolest Strat tone ever. Yes classical, in it's day, nothing else like it...and now a lot of copy cats, but it started with the Strat!

Thanks for the ideas and links! Vibes from a time we only listened to the radio ,in my country. And I was so young that I did not have a conscious relation to music - but , somehow - these tones must have been played on the radio - they really feel like ''home'' . Great players ! 8)

The guitar evolved structurally and sonically from its roots in 1954. What I call 'classic' hails back to the period before there was a rosewood board, a five way switch, and an SB3 or duco paint finish. The guitars also started out using ash before he switched to alder. Nor was the quality control and consistency in production as rigid as they are in today's product, hence a wider variation in tones.{e.g. the legend of SRV's '59 and Clapton's mongrel "Blackie']

Jeff describes finding what we called 'the inbetween sound'...the 2 and 4 positions which the 5 way made simpler. In another discussion on this way back when, I took the position that, to my ear, something about 'crossing the wire' with the 3 way switch sounded different from the 5-way.

In the book The Stratocaster Chronicles, there's a CD sampling of the tones of the guitar as reflected in the styles of noted artists across the years. Holly, however, is my go to artist for the sound of a vintage Strat as I remember it. Playing Holly's stuff on a '58 through a clean amp sounded like the recordings.

Also, if you look at the Beach Boys, while Carl always seemed to be on a search for tone, Fender, Rick, etc... Al Jardin almost always played his Strat. (occasionally you will see him with a Jag.) Back in the 60's anyhow. That Strat rhythm guitar was a part of their signature sound.
