Silver coil wire? Crazy.

The fanciness of the 'display case' (for guitar pickups? :? ) gives me pause, these are guitar pickups, not jewelry or ancient coins or something.

Has anyone tried these?

Pure Silver Magnet Wire - Lowest resistance of any metal known

 I guess they never heard of gold.

Softer and more supple than copper wire

:? "Supple"? What kind of electrical characteristic is that? Sounds more like a skin care product.

The layers of the coil stack up more neatly and evenly

The type of wire used has nothing to do with how it stacks up. Any wire can do this if care is taken during the winding process.

No effing way!

Never use them, you know they have to stay in that box-forever
They are good for Seymour.
Box was made from elfenwood and the silver wire is hair taken from maidens of the lost city of Atlantis.
They sound absolutely KILLER! I am pretty sure, but you know don´t use them in a .... guitar

Cheers,
Robin

good info RBC, I also had the impression that gold was better because it's used in computer circuits, but that's because of it's non corrosive properties. Still won't find me paying $1000 for PUPs though

Exactly, however thinks like speaker cables and things like that then silver is the way to go, as it's not exposed outside of the wire, especially if you crimp the plugs onto the end.

But still, no effing way I'm buying these pups.

I am very curious how they sound.... by using silver you could get much more wire mass on there with less total resistance hrmmm I wonder what effect this would have on the pickup inductance.... I am actually tempted

if someone does try them out could i borrow them for examination?

Nothing explains the amazing price of those Duncan pickups. Silver is affordable: type "sterling silver wire" into Ebay or Google and you'll find plenty of it at perfectly sensible prices. Here's some 0.03mm (approx. 47 gauge) silver wire at £13 / $20 for ten metres (first item on the page):

http://wires.co.uk/acatalog/si_bare.html

The wire gets a lot cheaper the fatter it is, and I notice they mention the third item down is rated at 2.02 ohms per metre, which might give us pause for thought. Though that's for 0.1mm / 38 gauge wire, which would be a bit fat for pickup winding.

So. No reason the inquisitive home builder shouldn't experiment with silver wound pickups at a tiny fraction the price of those Seymour Duncans. I doubt I can be bothered, but...

BTW: that website happens to be a good source for pickup winding wire in a variety of modern and vintage specs. I have several kilos of their copper wire that I must get round to making some P90s with sometime. So little time, so many projects.

Cheers - C
