in the intonation ( fine tuning section ) it mentions to depress the string evenly to the fret, not the finger board
exactly where are they asking you to press
am a bit lost

Actually, it should be directly behind the intended fret to the fingerboard.

exactly why i am lost
is that behind the fret but not toching the fingerboard
behind the fret and touching the finger board
why did fender say fret and not the fingerboard

Hi Trini. I too find the wording a little unclear especially the fret / fingerboard reference.
Stratocaster® Setup Guide wrote:
Check each string at the 12th fret, harmonic to fretted note (make sure you are depressing the string evenly to the fret, not the fingerboard).

I think you just need to finger the note in the normal fashion - i.e. behind the fret - and in doing so you touch the fingerboard. The only exception to this which comes to mind is for a scalloped fingerboard where depressing the string all the way down to the fingerboard would make the note much sharper.

Cheeers!

If you are talking about the harmonic, it is with your finger touching lightly on the string, directly above the intended fret.

If you're talking about the outright fretted note, it is depressing the string to the fingerboard at the given fret with your finger as close to the fret as possible without your finger outright touching this fret.

I cannot speak for Fender.

You should press the string down to the fret just hard enough that the note rings cleanly without buzzing. If you mash the string all the way down to the fretboard the note will be sharp.

Fender is talking about the string itself, not your fingertips. Your fingers will contact the fretboard while playing and while intonating, but if you press the string all the way down to the wood you're pressing too hard.
