I use silicone cloth to protect fishing reels and other metal and finished objects. I thought it might be a good choice for protecting the guitar, including the strings.

Is silicone cloth a good tool for keeping my guitar clean?

I recommend you get those micro fiber type of cloth...it pick up tiny dirt when you wipe it instead of dragging it along the surface of the body.

Prolong use of silicone cloth will lead to swirl marks on the surface of the guitar....

Silicon polish won't hurt your guitar...but silicon is a very migratory substance and very hard to remove once it's on. Not good to have on the guitar if any fiinish touch ups or repairs are envisaged.

The reason silicone is hard to get off your finish is because silicone PENETRATES the finish (or so I have been told by PPG and Dupont) well it does on car paint and furniture finishes too. I know by personal exp. it's a grade A (you know what) to get out of the paint.
I have used the polishes the guitar mfrs reccomend; I have used furniture polish and carnuba car wax all to good results. The best thing to use is what the mfrs reccomend; they know what that finish is and what it'll take.

It is generally recommended by the pros like Dan Erlewine to avoid anything with silicone.

You can buy a micro cloth for $ 2 in your local music store. Then buy Fender Spray Mist and Wipe for a few more bucks. I wouldn`t use silicone on my guitar but that`s up to you.

Say no to silicone!

I made the mistake once of using a silicone based product.

Stay away from silicone. It's really hard to get off and has no benefit.
