The research designs employed by the participating presenters will certainly be of great interest.

No one seems to have mentioned the finish on a maple fretboard. When I first started shopping for my strat, about two years ago now, I tried several strats with maple fretboards. They had a heavy finish that made me feel like I was playing a piece of plastic. I was turned off, and wouldn't play another maple board guitar and ended up buying a rosewood board Am Dlx. I've since realized that not all maple boards have that very heavy finish, and I now want to get a maple board strat so I have options.
So who can tell me, the maple boards with the heavy finish that feel like plastic, are they poly? And the ones that feel more natural, are they nitro?

Now I know. My newest guitar has an ebony board. I love it. Rosewood may end up going from my #1 choice to #3. Funny how we evolve.

I have always loved the look of the maple fretboard. I have an arctic blue Strat with a light green pickguard. Awesome looking guitar, but it would out of this world with the maple fret board. However, as others have mentioned the maple doesn't function as well for me. I need the rosewood grain to get some purchase when fretting.

Been playing an AmDlx with maple. Just got a AmStd with rosewood. The AmStd is brighter sounding than the AmDlx. My goto is a Tele/Maple. Wanted a rosewood neck for gigging as I don't take my ebony ES-347 out much anymore so got the Strat/rosewood. Shopped for one, was looking for a 2012 but then found a 2011 which has a very tight grain and darker appearance like an ebony.

The strings vibrate from metal fret to metal bridge not fretboard to bridge. If they were fretless then the particular wood on the fretboard might matter. Too many other factors play a more important role in the individual tone of the individual unique guitar.

Might as well throw my hat in the ring. The only thing that I see with the maple vs rosewood is the maple neck is not as forgiving as a rosewood.
That's it and I have own a ton of each.

I'm not sure my ear is good enough to pick out the part of any guitar's tone which is attributable to maple or rosewood on the board....

I have a tele style guitar with a maple neck/rosewood fret board...

at the weekend I ordered a maple/maple neck for it....

Will I be able to hear a difference after the swap? I don't expect to....

Why am I quoting myself? Well, the new maple/maple neck arrived and I swapped it for the rosewood decked one, using the same strings. Guess what? I can't hear any difference at all!! It looks better though :)

Screw rosewood and maple. I prefer ebony fretboards. I love the way they look, and I especially love the way they feel. I prefer ebony fretboards with mahogany bodies, but alder/maple with a super distortion sounds nice as well. I do have several guitars with rosewood fretboards but I would not be disappointed if I woke up on xmas day and found them all to be magically transformed into ebony. lol

A multi-million dolalr study was done by the Canadian World Institute of Tonology at their Wales campus on this exact issue.

They found that the cleaner surface and tighter grain of the maple fretboard made the tone fairies happier and their life sparkled unlike their brethren caught in the dark world of the rosewood fretboard. LOL...

Funny for me it is a cosmetic thing. I cannot imagine a Stratocaster or Telecaster with anything other than a maple fretboard. On the other hand, I would never buy a Gibson without one.

The simple solution to this debate is: Fender should randomly grab 2 telecasters and 2 stratocasters, same models, 1 maple and 1 rosewood of each, and put them through one of them thar spectrum anal-lie-zers, plus do a blindfold players' test. The machine will give you the actual numbers, the blindfold test will test the ears of the players. Done. Then, we won't have to go back and forth on this ever again!

Of course, many of us can feel the difference between rosewood and maple, so...the blindfold test won't really be a blindfold test to some.

I just tried two of Gibson's SG Specials with baked maple boards, vurrrrry bright sounding SGs unplugged, settled on a Standard w/ rosewood, vurrry warm sounding SG unplugged, much better for my needs, the purrfect compliment to a maple boarded strat!

If Gibson would like to climb on-board, they can bring some baked maple and rosewood Les Paul and SG test subjects to the table for a more complete analysis.

Fender? :D

Of course you understand that the scientific method cannot be rigorously applied to a resolution of this question because no two guitars are exactly alike though they may outwardly appear to be.

Of course. Howwwwwever, an orange tastes like an orange and a tangerine tastes like a tangerine -- two distinct but similar flavors. Conversely, ignoring the color issue, rosewood and maple (they both look purty)...two distinct but similar flavors!
