Friction.

Rosewood causes friction when sliding the hand up and down the neck. It feels "rough"
Maple is smooth and offers less friction when sliding up and down the neck.

So it's up to the player.

Some people like tactile feedback(Rosewood)on the touchscreen of their Android device (slightly vibrates when you touch something on the screen). Some people don't like it.

As for tone, yes Rosewood and Maple will effect the tone, as does a plethora of variables too great to list. (Wood, age of wood, metals, bridge, nut, strings, pickups, amplifiers, effects, the list goes on ad infinitum).

There is no definitive manner in which Rosewood or Maple will change the tone. As others have said they have played Rosewoods that are bright and Maple that is dark, and vice versa. Same with sustain. It more depends on the actual cut of the wood and not the wood type itself.

So what can you do? Keep playing all the guitars you can get your hands on and you will see what we mean. The only two expected differences that you can guarantee is that Rosewood and Maple look different and feel different.

On behalf of us all, you're welcome and here's a free tip for you: Don't go near the "Ash vs. Alder Body" thing either.

Yes hilarious, but i'd still like to enquire about this discussion, that '56 olympic white strat looks very nice, but I found out it's ash, and was turned off momentarily, then I found out the '54 strats were all ash. this is interesting. might want to scoop one up If I could.

but the maple rosewood thing, I like them both, I have one guitar right now it's rosewood, I use to have a maple, I love them both. the maple had a little more butter; slick. I would go with rosewood for rhythem and maple for lead, if it comes down to it. get one of each if you can, that's my plan.

I'm SURE this has been discussed on this forum, but I've tried searching past posts and can't find it.

Hee-hee... Hi Chris: this one has been discussed rather a lot, to say the least. If you haven't found those threads you won't know about the enormous can of wriggling worms you've just opened. This subject tends to lead to cyber fist fights before the end of page one: sit back and enjoy... or run for the hills.

Cheers - C

I remember your preference but I'll just leave it at that.

Sometimes I like my Pizza with pepperoni, sausage and/or extra cheese. YMMV.

The comparison means nothing. The test from a scientific standpoint is void right out of the gate. Each guitar had a different kind of strings on it, IE: different tone will be produced. Secondly, we have no way to verify that each guitar contains identicle sets of pickups and that they are in turn adjusted to identicle height. We have no way to know for certain that each guitar is made from the same wood and possibly from the same tree, ergo different tones will be produced. I found that video to be pointless purely from the scientific standpoint based on the fact there are just too many unprovable variables between each guitar, and the string difference. Did each one sound different, yes. Did one sound better than the other? To me, no. Did I like the one with the maple fretboard better? Yes. Why? because I like maple fretboards better. it's a matter of player preference and no amount of psudo-science will ever sway a players feel. They guy playing on the video was however quite good I thought, so, thanks for posting it, I found it good for something.

Au contraire mon frere, no "Infallible Web Dogma" here! A cornucopia for the palette is experienced from a truly superior pie. I should know, not only am I a gumba but I was born and raised in NYC!
