I don't seem to see much talk about the Select series for 2012 here. Are you guys underwhelmed by these guitars? I've played both the Select Strat and Select HSS Strat and thought they sounded superb. I don't like that the HSS is only available with a Rosewood neck so that model is out for me. On the other hand, the Select Strat is calling to me - just a great sounding guitar. I've got an EJ Strat and a Hot Rod 62 already but this Select is calling to me. I love the flamed wood grain on this instrument and the precise, clear, near noiseless pickups. Anyone else a fan?

The lack of response, or the audible noise of crickets, is an answer unto itself.

While I was somewhat interested in the Select HSS, I eventually opted for the Deluxe HSS.

Although the two guitars look totally different, it's the features that made me make my decision. While I'm sure the pickups are great on the select, I wanted to get the N3's as I'd heard they were pretty quiet. On top of that, the Deluxe HSS has an LSR roller nut. Tuning and noise being two of my biggest concerns, that is how I came to choose the Deluxe HSS over the Select HSS.

That being said, if I were able to have heard the Select pickups and I thought they were better for my purposes than the N3's, then I might have changed my mind. I am a pretty big fan of birds eye maple necks. If the board were ebony (or even maple) instead of rosewood and it had an LSR roller nut... then I probably would've gotten the Select over the Deluxe.

I'd like to hear one in person someday!

As for my deluxe, it may very well be the last electric guitar I buy for years and years! (Basses excluded!!)

Yep, I love my American Deluxe strat. The N3 pickups, the compound radius fretboard, the paint job, I could go on and on.

I have had a standard USA bought new in '88. Played a few others strats and none as good as my standard to my ears. I wouldn't dream of parting with it but last month I treated myself to a new strat and I ended the quest with the s/s/s select. I tried an EC and a deluxe and though both were big and powerful sounding with plenty of sounds the select had a rich elegance that I preferred. The select is the only strat I have heard that beats my '88 standard. However, try them all (if you haven't already bought) and buy what suits your fingers and ears best.

Lack of response is perhaps because they are hard to find and darn near the price of a custom shop. I'd rather source out a body for Warmoth then pay Fender for the Select series...

I have the Fender Select Mahogany HSS strat and I love it.

There's so much that goes into what you like about a guitar. What type of music do you play? What are your hands like - bigger and need a wider neck? Smaller, but still want a wider neck for bends?

My influences range from AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Van Halen, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin....to Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn.

So it's basically "Hard Rock" to "Blues Rock", with smaller groups of songs outside those artists.

The Mahogany HSS is great for AC/DC with the Humbucker, as it comes close to the Gibson SG. The middle single coil has some oomph - like Hendrix on "Foxy Lady" or Clapton on Crossroads. And the Neck pickup has a more smooth tone, such as Buddy Guy on "Feels like Rain" or, with the volume turned down, can get some "trebly spank" like SRV on Cold Shot. John Mayer Trio sounds great on it too.

What it isn't good for?

Well, it really can't duplicate the Les Paul sound very well - such as Slash on the Appetite for Destruction album. But a lot of guitarists that are known for Les Pauls (Jimmy Page comes to mind) have tones which can be achieved with other guitars. Aerosmith, Sabbath...bands like that can be done with this guitar real well.

Van Halen? The pickup really isn't hot enough for it, but it's OK.

Super shredding? Some really talented hands could do it, but I've found that the BC Rich/Ibanez types of guitars are better suited for it.

The Tex-Mex coils won't give you the purest strat blues sound that the N3 or Custom 50's will, but they'll get you blues rock.

So for me - being that the aforementioned bands are what I was looking for, this was perfect.

But if you're looking for Les Paul oomph, or a pure strat tone, or shredding....there are better guitars for you.

I'll be buying a new Fender Am Standard this summer for that pure bluesy-strat sound to compliment this guitar. I already have a Les Paul.

Still - this one is my all-time favorite guitar. Perfect for me.

Electric Guitar: Fender American Special Mahogany Stratocaster HSS

Isn't it a "Special" not a "Select"?

I thought it was, hence my description below my profile. Maybe it was, and then they changed the direction of the series?

I don't know.

But it's advertised as a Select now.

Still, there is a new series on the Fender website that is called "select", and my Mahogany strat isn't on the Fender website, so I'm assuming that it's not the one that people are referring to.

I purchased my 1st guitar in January 2013. The Select Series Strat (SSS) won me over. I like the visible figured maple wood grain and the maple neck. Granted, I am a newbie to guitars but my instructor was blown away by it at my 1st lesson. He has been playing Strats since the late 50's and was in a band called the Big Three in early 60's Liverpool. Played in the Cavern and was managed by Brian Epstein.

For a first guitar, you don't hold back! But again, I've seen some rather fabulous Custom Shops at the same prices of the Select. I think the CS had a large inventory of leftover bodies from orders that were never filled. Fender did something like this in the late 90's with basses... My bassist has an American Jazz Bass with the Flame Maple top which was a leftover from the Custom Shop.
