which is preferable the more modern drilling with the strings way up inside the block or the old style with the beveled hole and the string ends closer to the bottom of the block does it matter? does either give better tuning stability or greater sustain? i know strings bind in newer smaller blocks from time to time making them more difficult to push out at string changes but other than that, does it matter? thanks. brian

I'd say no.
It has an effect on easier string change but I couldn't find a difference in tuning stability or sound. The trem block material has way more effect on sound due to relative weight and mass.

The bullet ends of the strings have more effect on tuning stability compared to ball ends.

I don't think there's a difference between an inch more or less within the block, given that the hole drilling has the same quality (no stuck ballends in too tight holes).
The angle of the protruding string on top of the trem is the same as well.

I've hears that drilling a deeper hole in the block is supposed to increase tuning stability, but I say Hooey. I'm with Smokin' on this one, only the depth of the ball changes, the angle out of the block is the same, and the tension of the string is the same. I don't see the point of that mod at all.

I have to concur here as well. Also if you go drilling deeper holes could lead to disastrous results if not done correctly.

I use Bullets exclusively on my Fender made Tremols. I'd say there is between a quarter to half inch length before it hits the saddle if even that muck, but never really measured.

i wasn't planning any mods or drilling just seeking opinions because of some things that i have read about upgraded after market trem blocks, and how they are drilled as compared to some oem blocks. thanks for your answers everyone. brian
