Just thought I'd follow up with some information I found after posting to this thread. There is a hidden switch setting that gives you the neck and middle pickups together. It's between the number 3 (middle only) and 4 (usual spot for neck and middle) positions. You'll definitely hear it when you get the switch in the right spot. There's no notch in the switch for this position but it will stay in place. Oh, and this setting is noise cancelling.

Interesting.....[this guitar is getting a lot of 'play' in these pages recently.]Are you saying that, going forward [bridge>neck]just ahead of the detente for position 4 on this guitar's 5-way, there's a 'sweet spot' that's noise cancelling?. If true, then this lends some substance to my contention that getting that 2 &4 position on the 3-way switch by trial and error years back yielded a subtley different tone than that obtained with the 5-way which replaced it, bearing in mind now, that we're talking a '58 Strat with the circutry and pickup characteristics of that time period.

Yes. That's what I'm saying. It was a pretty cool little surprise. Makes me love this guitar even more.

One really has to know their guitars when out shopping. I was playing an HSS Strat at GC yesterday and it's tag read the word Players and nothing more. It was sunburst w a v-neck and the SC's were VN's. Me thinks it was leftover older model of the Modern Player in that I don't find that guitar in the current line-up.
