I'm planning a strat build and I have a set of fender hot alnico 3 pickups. These are already hot pickups with DC resistance from 10-12k. I was wondering if I'll install a dummy coil for this set, would there be any effect on tone and output?

Overall frequency response and output are affected (+/-) in varying degrees based on four chief factors, all interdependent on each other:

1. Whether the dummy coil is wired in series or parallel to the active one;
2. What the dummy coil's wire gauge (and quality of same) is in comparison to the active coil;
3. The DC resistance of the dummy coil;
4. The resistance of the volume pot(s).

Briefly, your best bet is to wire in series to each OEM pickup, a similarly designed coil (NO magnets attached) with say, 20% less DC resistance than that of the OEM it is teamed with. The circuit will not be 100% humbucking but the hum would be GREATLY reduced and the OEM pickup would continue to retain most of its attributes. Of course, switch the volume pot(s) to 500K.
