Have you repaired that longtitudinal crack in the headstock yet?

not yet, i can't force the wood to make contact on that crack, as in the case of the rosewood laminate in the fretboard. for that i'll use another restoration technique which reinforces the wood without applying pressure on it

Sounds intriguing......be sure to document this phase with pics.

yeah, I'll be posting my progress with images. now my concern is how the change of oil content in the grain of the wood will affect the overall volume of it, it may swell, bend, twist etc... OR it will just say thank you by staying the way it is...

Looks like you can kind of see the F from the Fender logo on the headstock in that one pic.

I actually do! i haven't noticed that until you mention it.
looking closely the entire fender logo can be seen, but the F is easily noticeable. the oil must have penetrated the grain in a way that made the the glue or some other material on the decal appear.
funny how little discoveries like this can make my day happier. :D

Not sure if you got your answers however the first 22 tells that its a strat neck and its a B and it does look like 68 from the 8 in the last position going left to right. Also the body routes look to be correct for that time from 68 to 70 comparing to my 70 strat and the neck plate is most likely something that was just added and the original was tossed. hope this helps Best Regards

So... where was I?
I've been out of town, the "restoration" process has been a lot slower . anyways, this is my progress so far.

I couldn't apply pressure on the crack in the peg head, tried but it did nothing to the wood. what i did instead was a deep fill injected with a mix of maple sawdust and wood glue, at a molecular level this is the closest y can get to the original material. once dry it will be as hard, if not harder than the wood

Finally I managed to take almost all rust material off the metal parts. i used WD-40 rust cleaner, Naval Jelly rust dissolver, water and WD-40 again.

Bought fret wire... this stuff is hard to find in mexico (good quality, i mean), my original idea was to get pre bent, pre cut fender brand frets but this is all I could find, All Parts brand -medium size.
I had to build a fret bender with mechanical parts and wood i had lying around in my storage room (sorry, no pictures of that right now).

By the way: the fretboard's radius is 7 1/4"

The Fender blank bone nut fits perfectly in it's place, no extra work was needed, I just have to cut it at length and do the string guides, or whatever the little cuts on the bone are called.

That project should be fun. From everything I have read over the past 40 plus years is Leo Fender would use ALL parts and this policy over-lapped into the CBS years when he was running the plant....5 years, I think it was! I think, your guitar is around the 1968 year. In the later 1960's I was in a band(1967) and our bass player had a 1967 jazz bass(NEW) with a " L series" bolt/neck plate. It had a three color sunburst finish. It was around this time, I was hearing Leo Fender stories about using pre-CBS parts on CBS era Fenders. Now, we all know this is a fact....they didn't throw parts away! very cool thread you have here! Good Luck!

I agree, now I'm pretty sure it is a 68. I should change the trend's title... as i am more interested in the "restoration" more than the "authentication", and of curse, it's not a '64. The neck plate got me confused. there's a real possibility that this guitar is a similar case as your friend's jazz bass. i can't get tired of saying how interesting this whole thing is.

thank you so much for sharing the info!.

I'm curious as to those tuners, from the pics I don't see telltale signs of the previous tuners, that is indentation marks from the original tuners, which I believe are of a larger body, so these should not be an exact retrofit unless.....

If you haven't yet taken any of the tuners off, I would, just to see what is revealed. If there are no marks other than from the current set, then I would try to find out if it was possible that Fender would have installed a set of those on a customer's request back in the sixties....
I find that plausible if not perhaps likely but why not... :?:

As you can see, these tuners use two screws in "diagonal" each, BUT there's only one extra hole between the third and fourth tuner hole... I have no idea what this means.
The more I found out about this guitar, the more questions i have! LOL

Did you take some "before" pics for reference?
Was there a screw in that extra hole? Perhaps holding the two corresponding tuners in that may have been loose?

Yes, here's another angle of the tuners before I dismantled the guitar.
no screw ... that hole was just there below the two middle tuners with no apparent reason, the rest of the holes correspond to every tuner spot.

by the way, those are back in place, clean and in the original order, I used the amount of rust (or lack of chrome , now) on each piece as a reference.
