I noticed today while playing a 62 hot rod deluxe that the neck "seemed" wider at the upper frets. I looked and I noticed Fender doesn't publish that information. was it my imagination or are some strats wider then others in the upper fret region? I think tonight I will get the caliper out and measure my strats.

thanks

You are correct, sir. The nut width is almost always less than the heel width, so it follows that the 12th fret width will be wider than the nut width. The nut width and the width at the heel will be at or around spec, and then everything in between is as close to a straight line as they felt like it being on the factory floor that day. In some factories (I can't say how Fender does it) they can sometimes dip in a bit if they were over-zealous grinding fret ends, shaping the neck back, or taking out scratches before finishing.

If it seems more pronounced on one instrument than another, chances are that there is more "shoulder" there than you're used to. Fender tends to keep a C or V shape as you move up, but other models beef up nicely as you move up the neck. If you're a thumb wrapper, a little extra girth will make the whole thing feel much wider, even if the actual width is doing the same thing the rest of the neck is doing.
