Might seem like a weird question. A stand is a stand, right?

Here's the reason I'm asking. I posted earlier about a few neck pocket cracks that developed recently on my Strat. I understand it's common. But someone said to me that it could be because my guitar stand isn't holding the guitar at a proper angle, causing neck pressure. Now I think this is sorta crazy. It's a standard, double-sided stand that keeps the Strat on one side and my Taylor acoustic on the other.

BUT. The truth is I did just get this stand about a month ago when I got the Taylor. And it does cushion the neck close to the head stock, where the old stand was in the middle of the neck. So is it possible it's creating a weird pressure on the neck? All in all it looks like it lays at the same angle.

It's just something I never thought about. Guitar stands are just no-brainers really. They're all cheap and do the same thing. Right?

Hmm so this doesn't quite add up to me.. so does the stand you have hold the axe like a hanger (like one of the Hercules stands would) and the body rests on the two front legs?

Pictures?

and stands really are not created equal,, the cheapo 20 dollar ones where the guitar sits in that little "pitchfork" cradle thing (that swivels around) and the base of the guitar rests on the two forks, and the neck rest against the top half, are really precarious.

I wont use em unless they have something to secure them at the neck (many have a little elsatic gripper thing, but still, these care the crap out of me. To watch a $2,500 Les Paul take a slow-motion topple to the floor... oh the humanity...

I have a few that fold out with a wide base, (sort of like A Frames, the guitars sit in firmly the base and lean against a neck support. Very sturdy, you have to be trying to knock them off to move them off these stands.

Here is a link to the one I use. Don't have a pic of my actual guitars on it.

http://www.guitarcenter.com/On-Stage-Stands-Double-Flip-It-Guitar-Stand-102659828-i1410651.gc

I think it's a very stable stand (unless anybody thinks otherwise, please let me know). It has a great padded lever mechanism to keep the neck secure. But my question is can the angle a guitar sits, or more specifically where on the neck the support lays, affect the tension or pressure of the neck against the body of the guitar.

Will You Please Just Go Play The Darned Thing....For Crying Out Loud....

You are really going for the silliest questions of the month award....

A strat resting on the stand maybee applies at most 1/2lb of weight at the neck resting point.

Your strings ( set of 009's ) pressure the neck ( string pull ) of around 109lbs.
If resting the neck on a stand would cause cracks on your guitar then you would also have an impossible time in tuning that guitar. The amount of movement needed at that neck heel /focal point would be more than a screwed down neck would allow...
Think about where you read this silliness and what the responses were....X-Files...

Please..... Before posting such nonsense reasoning, do some research or I'm sure there is/will be a convention in Las Vegas that you can attend to allay your fears...

As they say misery loves company.....

Sorry if I'm bothering you with my questions. Somebody gave me some info (that even in my inexperience sounded ridiculous) and I wanted to get the thoughts of better-schooled guitar players. Don't mean to waste anybody's time.

If the stand is likely to move and topple over, I say go outside take that 1/2 chain off your Harley and use it to tie down the stand and guitar after screwing eyebolts thru the floor...
That should take care of any wobbling stand.....

Actually all kidding aside years ago, I broke the neck just behind the nut on my 59 LPC. But the amp was full on, the doorbell rang, I ran to the front door ( new girlfriend, at 19 I wasn't thinking straight ) tripping on the cord and as i answered I heard this major open chord sound that went down a full step, except the Les Paul did not have a Bigsby.....

Stop scaring the OP....

I was playing a show about a month after I had just gotten a new les paul standard, there it was, sittin pretty,, right, cord, in the jack,, Ooops.. Some one walked by and snagged the chord, and I watched in horror as it started to head to the floor. Bass player seeing it all go down, was close enough sprang into action, he got there in time and grabbed the neck well before it made any contact, I was definitely not close enough... Saved my bacon.. still buying that guy beers to this day (he's also my brother inlaw! LOL!)

Anyway I'm having a hard time understanding his problem, but I can't see how it would have anything to do with a stand either, but I don't mind him asking the question here..

OP - Dedario, you are not bothering me, if you were I would not be answering with sarcasm and rather would be snide and insulting....

Just think about it...First....There is so much misinformation on the net and from people who don't play very well, have never played a gig in their lives, don't build guitars and don't have any knowledge about woods, tension requirements of wood fastening systems and on and on.
Just because an idea or reasoning goes viral does not make it credible...However...

I just landed a small shipment of the new Apple Screws...I'm willing to let them go at this time only discount price of $15.99 just for my friends on the Fender Forum...

This actually is a great Forum, but one does have to read thru the lines if something just doesn't sound quite right, do some research and draw your own intelligent conclusions..

And you are not wasting our time but you are supplying irresistible material for pulling your leg....

That being said, any question which is sound will be answered by someone here and you can be fairly certain that it is up to scrutiny. If not then there will be quick rebuttal on the very same thread...( music /instruments related here, not political..)

If you want to know just how strong these guitars are, then go to a club and watch the guitar players who are constantly playing and gigging, you will see Stratocasters being abused literally and still being ready to play on the next song.....

Well that was always my thought on it. Guys thrash around with their guitars. I play on the couch. I couldn't imagine what I was doing would be harming it. That info I heard wasn't online, BTW, it was from a guitar player at work. This was my way of filtering that bad info out.

Anyway, enough's enough. Thanks for the info on it.

You're welcome just don't worry too much about your guitar, just follow a few rules...

(1) wipe it down after playing
(2) If you don't have a secure place to keep it out, away from foot traffic keep it in it's case which I believe when not being played, guitars should be in their cases.
(3) Find a good tech that you can rely on, ususally they work at small music stores that have been around a long time..
(4) keep it well set up
(5) I would recommend getting at the very least, Paul Balmers book the Fender Stratocaster 2nd edition. Much on set up, pickups and various models, signature an otherwise.

(6) If something does feel incorrect, then do ask us here at the Fender Forum...

Cheers
