I've just acquired a '95 MIM 'Squier series' which has it's single string tree flat on the head unlike the usual setup with the tree on a small pillar. This must make the break angle steeper. Is this okay or is it wise to add a pillar? I'm just concerned about string breakage or sticking when string bending or using the trem.

Fender has used many different string tree configurations over the years, including this one. Change it or don't. Your choice.

I prefer a spacer beneath the string tree. Fender offers two styles -- a short one (2.0mm) made of delrin or nylex plastic, and a taller one (3.0mm) fabricated from stainless steel.
