Hi

I was offered a 70's Fender strat for RM6500. RM is the Malaysian currency. That is about US$2093.73.

Here are the pics:

According to the seller, it has a 78 neck and a 74 and below body. The body is made of alder.

Here are the serial numbers provided by him:

Headstock: S868227
Neck plate: 0900#0292
Pickups: 82075

Based on this info, is it really worth the price?

I'm sceptical about this guitar. Mostly because of the headstock logo location. The "Fender" logo is in the wrong place.

Buyer beware. There are plenty of 70s Strats out there in better shape for less. I bought a beat up '79s Strat fro under $1K.

I'll post a photo if you want.

No, actually that is how Fender was doing the decals on the lefty necks for a while in the late 70s. I have seen that style decal before; there are currently 2 1978s on gBase - they are the only lefties from the 1976-1981 time period listed:

Here is the other one:

I do agree with you that the one the op posted is in really rough shape, but then again it's probably hard to turn one up in Malaysia.

why does it have a right handed body and a left handed neck? is that the way they made the left handed ones at one time?

Per the OP the guitar is a parts Strat with a '78 neck (that happens to be a lefty neck) and a '74 body - I suppose whomever put it together just wanted the lefty neck to give the guitar that Hendrix-style string tension.

I only pulled the headstock photos from gBase, but if you go there and do a search for Fender Stratocasters 1976-1981 and select left-handed only you'll get the original listings that show the matching left-handed bodies.
