Ok I've taken the strings off and im tying get this oil off. I'm not noticing massively rough areas without the strings on. Do I need to be careful with the fret dots?

Meanwhile...

I brought it to the shop. The Luthier was there. I showed him what was up. He saw it, felt it, said it was crap. He then said that he was gonna take it, use a polishing wheel on it and buff the crap out of it. Then he showed me a smooth rosewood guitar neck and said, you want it like that? I played it and said yea, he then said ok. It will be.

I get it back tomorrow. Hopefully, as Wacko Jacko said, this is it.

He also said that the board isn't over oiled, but I think that's because I spent 4 hours wiping it down.

I guess he's gonna do what I (based on your advice) was gonna do but on a larger, more effective scale.

Thanks Martian, Ceri. Updates tomorrow!

I'll give them a call tomorrow anyway. Did you hear the issue in the video? Any thoughts on that?

Is that what you feel can be fixed with steel wool? If yes, Any videos you can recommend that can guide me? I take it the board should be a lot drier before doing it?

The board doesn't feel rough in any areas as such, but I'm still getting that issue, I'm not sure why its doing it. I think is have to do the whole board as I can make it happen everywhere with little effort.

Do you have an answer as to the cause?

Thanks again, I really appreciate it.

Truth be told, I didn't because I've already stated what the root cause and remedy are.

You're welcome.

On behalf of Ceri and myself, once again, you're welcome.

It seems like you're finally on the right track; good luck!

Ya. I hope so. 24 hours till D-Day. If not, I'm gonna get them to exchange the neck. He said he might be able to sort me something out.

I like them at that shop, they're nice to me. I feel bad for going somewhere else... Like I've cheated on them.

Ah well, a second opinion is always good, but it turns out that I think that that opinion was a bit wrong. In the future I'm gonna ask to speak to the Luthier directly.

(If he fixes it :P )

Ok, update. They got me the guitar back. Much smoother, but still too much of an annoyance for me. I just can't deal with the fact that I spent that much money on a guitar and it's still not perfect.

I explained this to them and asked them for a neck swap. They are putting a Maple one on for me :D

I played a few, and I picked one that I felt was the best. Bending on them seems a little tougher than on the rosewood, just the tension, but I'm hoping that will be fixed with the setup they'll do. I know that maple necks are a little bit tighter than rosewood but that's something I'll get used to again.

The only guitar I played for years was my Maple Tele and I was fine with that so that's no issue.

Anyway, can't wait to get my guitar back :)

Thanks hehe. Out of interest, is it true that Maple necks are a bit tighter when bending than Rosewood? My Tele feels like this, as did the two Strats I played in the shop when testing necks, The Strat I have/had and my LP are set up, I assume these two weren't and my Tele isn't it.

I guess that could be why? (Silly question I think)

You're welcome.

Frankly, I think it is a really valid question. Of course, any properly set up instrument will play easier. Yet, with all things being equal, here's my take on it, unscientific as it may be: Maple boards are tighter in the sense that with a rosewood board, the fingerboard microscopically 'gives' to finger pressure whereas a maple board will not. This is all the more prevalent with a glossed maple board vs. an unfinished rosewood one. Hence, the perception of a stiffer bend all the more. The larger the frets though, the less distinction will be had between the two wood species for with larger frets, the strings will microscopically 'give' more due to the height of the frets, resulting in less direct finger pressure on the board.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.

That is one of the reasons I tend to favorite maple boards. I love both, but the maple feels slicker because of the finish on it.

So I got it. They swapped the neck.

It feels really smooth, and just as it should do :)

Thanks Ceri, Martian for taking the time to help me, I really feel that you wanted to help me sort it out. It probably seems extreme to change the neck but I just couldn't get on with it. I wanted to, but just found it too aggravating.

Thanks again. :)
