Which tremolos do you like the most and why, Two point, Floyd, vintage 6 screw? Which do you think has better tonal qualities?

tonal qualities are miniscule between them, its all about feel to me. the two point systems are much more sensitive and responsive when floating. where the 6 screw provide more resistance and is less likely to distort with a heavy hand. the 2 point also doesn't require as much setup to work perfectly. but I still prefer the 6 hole. it just suites my style better.

I don't own a guitar with the 2 point, and I don't like em. It is not so much the tone as it is the use and set up. I find the 2 point much more difficult to get set up right and I am not even sure you could set one up blocked.

To be fair to the 2 point, I don't use the trem and have all of mine blocked and prefer to use finger vibrato vs the trem. So IMHO the 6 point is more versital and it is kind of hard to argue that Leo didn't get it right the first time out...not convinced it is an "Improved" tremelo.

FWIW

Leo understood and admitted that his six screw bridge wasn't accurate as far as staying in tune with use. The two screw is better for tuning stability, but the advantage of a double-locking system such as the FR is rock solid tuning stability with whammy use, that can't be matched with the traditional types.

Shimmy...To be fair, I don't think Leo ever thought that SRV would be bouncing his Strat off the floor and EXPECTING it to still be in tune. People have gone way beyond what the intent was when Leo built that trem. And I stand by my words on setting up the two point being blocked.

 Yes, I'm sure that back then the trem was used lightly to say the least, think Bill Carson.

As far as blocking, all versions can be done the same way, no difference. I don't use an actual block of wood, just tighten the claw screws down so that the bridge doesn't move, same with Am Std and Blacktop. But a block of wood can be used on the six screw and two screw just the same, wedged between bridge block and body. You can raise the two screw bridge up off of the body in the front if wanted, but it works equally well when setup just like the six screw.

Shimm...funny you should mention Bill Carson...he was the Fender Sales Rep for the Southeast when I worked a Music Store in Florida and every now and then we could get him to jam a bit when time allowed. Let me tell you that man had once of the nicest touches on guitar I have ever seen :!: And he was about as accurate and smooth as you'll ever see. He was quite the gentleman too!

Awesome T2! From what I have read, Bill was involved with the development of the original Strat, as he was one of the artists that Leo consulted. Fantastic that you actually interacted with him. I bet he had some great stories as well as great talent. It is like you were a part of Fender history just being around him. :D

as said above the tonal differences between them arnt big, the differences in tone is more down to the type of metal used to make the saddles and the rest of the bridge

i have 6 point bridges on all my strats and i like them the best, they are strong as hell and give good feed bak when using it, i find it almost as controllable as a floyd

i have one guitar with a 2 point bridge, its very smoooooth and the only draw back is that its a little more work to set it up properly bt thats a minor issue

floyd bridges are a work of art but are quite fiddely to set up, change strings etc... however they are extreemley stable and hold tune almost as well as a fixed bridge guitar

Shimm, yeah talk about being lucky. It was hard to not be in awe of him. He didn't talk about the old days much, although he did a bit when the store came out with the Bill Carson Stratocaster and had exclusive rights to it. Long story short it was a great guitar and only 100 or so were made, the store used a bank for the loan for the run of guitars and the bank went out of business and the store got caught up in it and only the first 50 or so were made with thier serial number scheme and after the store went out of business another store (not sure where) got the rest of the run...it was too bad they were awesome guitars, wish I had kept one! And I have never seen one for sale either, not even on Ebay! They were kind of like a 57 reissue, but had absurdly birdseyed maple necks and were a color called Cimerron Red...named after a ballroom he played back in the 50s in Oklahoma. Anyway, yeah I have been a lucky guy over the years and it is always better to be lucky than good as they say.
