So I bough a Deluxe Player's strat but when I got home I realized I don't like the tones coming out of the guitar, it sounds too snappy and agressive maybe, it sounds like country and funk tones and that is not what I wanted a strat for AT ALL! I compared it to my old (probably chinese) Johnson brand guitar I got for little over $100 new and it's got a better fuller tone, warmer and mellower. The action is set lower on the deluxe but I think it's sopmething about the thiner, wider neck and/or body of the guitar giving it that muddy bright sound... Is it possible that the ash body is what coloring the sound and I don't like? Would alder sound more bluesy, jazzy rock? I guess I'm looking for sort of hendrix, eric johnson, john mayer tones... Would an upgrade to an american strat be worth the money?!!?

thanks!!!!

ash will add some spank but its not that drastic of a difference from alder. It is most likely the noiseless pickups in combination with your particular amp. what are you playing through? did you not try it out in the shop?

you could try some new pickups and sell the ones you have in it. for pickups i recommend this guy, he will custom wind them however you want for under $100. i am VERY pleased with the set I got from him. if you got alnico 2 magnets and enamel wire they would be very smooth and warm

I did! but I was paying more attention to the built quality, making sure everything worked, I thought I had to like it based on the features! I'm playing trough both my old 30watt johnson amp (probably chinese), and a 212 frontman I got with the guitar...

If you really dislike the guitar, sell or trade it for another. Unplugged most of my Strats sound pretty much the same. The tonal quality for each is different when plugged in. My American Standard sound just like my Highway 1. My Blacktop and Squier both sound a bit different, and I attribute that to the Floyd Rose Tremolos more than anything else.

It could be the wood on yours is not as resonate as you like. Try another guitar and see if there is a difference.

I seriously doubt that there's anything amiss with the guitar......

Go get yourself another made in china job. Btw, I like your emphasis on the made in china stuff.

Deluxe Strat's are damn good for the money.
