In 1988 I was 16 years old and worshipped Yngwie, and when Fender released the Malmsteen signature strats, I wanted one more than anything. But I was not even remotely able to afford one.

Now 24 years later, I finally have one coming my way! :D

I have spent a few days really thinking hard, which model to go for?
While it would be really nice to buy a brand new one, I figured I wanted something closer to what Yngwie actually used back when he was at his best.
The current ones are just a bit too much, with monster frets and Grand Canyon scallops, and I don't want the Seymour Duncan pickups.

So I decided I wanted the guitar I longed for back in 88'.
Pulled the trigger just a few minutes ago, on a 1988 Fender YJM , seems to be a really early one, judging by the Dimarzio tuners, which was supposedly changed to Klusons later in 88'.

Will be interesting to hear if the 88' HS-3's are different than the current ones as well. :)

Totally stoked now! !!!! ;D
Here's some crappy pictures from the auction, I'll of course update the thread with some great photos when it arrives.

Will probably upgrade the trem with Callaham bent steel saddles and steel sustain block, the Am.Std bridge may be the only drawback it seems.

I'm not sure which colors were offered in 88', is this CAR?

Wow, awesome find they are pretty rare these days.
Yes, it´s CAR I really love that color with the 1st Malmsteen.
Congrats and hope it will be as great as it looks.

Cheers,
Robin

Great score and cool story! I haven't seen a first generation Malmsteen in a very long time and that one looks nice - in fact I've never seen one with those DiMarzio tuners before, only the Klusons as I don't believe I ever saw one in person until 1989. Those tuners look like a pretty elegant solution to getting a sealed tuner that fits the Kluson/"F" tuner space (plus they have the split posts).

If I'm remembering correctly the other color for the early Malmsteens was sonic blue, but I could be wrong.

Thank you guys.

Yeah these seems to be fairly rare these days, have been looking for the first version on eBay for like forever it seems. So I was pretty exited when I saw it. Nerve wrecking as well, as I had to quickly sell an amp to fund it.
Luckily the amp sold in one day, so I guess the stars and moon were aligned correctly for me this time. :)

I'm sure I would have been happy with a later version, but this is the version I really wanted.

The sonic blue I remember from the ads is Guitar Player back then.

Thank you. The Peavey is an 80's axe made of decent wood it seems, the hardware and electronics weren't the best, but a couple DiMarzios and a Gotoh vintage bridge helped a lot! :)

Hehe thanks.

Forgot to add, recorded with a Line 6 UX1 interface, using the POD Farm software. Best $99 ever spent for me, quite cool software guitar tones for home use.

Congrats on this nice purchase!!
I've been fighting myself for a couple of months now. Should I get a Malmsteen strat or not?
I'm curious how scallopped frets would be played.
I decided not to buy one. I have a pretty firm grip on my fretboard.
Either it would help me to play with less pressure or I'd throw it to the walls.
I decided not to take the risk, ha ha ha.

I have about 20+ years on scalloped fretboards, the last 5-6 years on "normal" guitars.
Once you get used to scalloping you can switch back to non-scalloped with no problems.
Getting used to scallops will do wonders to your left hand technique... ;)

Yes, I heard that a lot, that's why I wanted to try it.
I have 28 years on standard fretboards and I don't know if I need this challenge, ha ha ha.

One certainly learns to play very relaxed with the left hand on the fretboard (right hand if you're lefty).
I better check on a cheaper model first before investing almost 1000 bucks.

:) You could always find a cheap CL beater or something and scallop it yourself, it's quite easy. I've played non-scalloped guitars for the last few years and coped quite well, but it feels great getting back to a scalloped neck. :)

And she's in!

Much better shape then the lousy eBay pictures hinted at, great! :)
Pulled the neck, 88' indeed:

Very little fretwear, and a fantastic feeling 50's type profile, not an Ibby Wizard neck for sure. :)
.870" at 1st fret, about an inch at the 12th. Nice fat U.

Needs a better setup, but I'll take care of that shortly.
Have a little hangup on the B and E in the nut, Nut Sauce helped, but it needs a little smoothing me thinks.
Took off the picguard and desoldered those TBX tone controls from the circuit, got to have it Yngwie correct :)

Sounds awesome, more bottom end than the Peavey, more top end "zing" and a purer, sweeter tone overall, fantastic tone.

Couldn't be happier. :) :) :)

Very nice guitar! And playing as well. I've never played a scalloped board but hope to try one sometime, mostly out of curiousity.
