Hello,

I have an Eric Clapton signiture strat. I am having trouble setting the intonation of the high E string. I run out of travel on the saddle. 12th fret is flat. This is the only string that won't intonate all others are fine. Any tips, tricks, or ideas? - Thank you

Hello Jeff-B,

Is your tuner calibrated to A-440?

Keep us posted.

Cheers.

Man that's wierd. As I look at the strat I'm playing at the moment, I see perhaps 1/4" of spare thread.

Do you have the suggest 1/8" gap at the rear of the bridge plate?

Have you run out of thread on the intonation screw or are you now hitting the pivot screws holding the bridge plate?

Check the heights of your pickups. If one is too high, the magnets could be affecting the pitch of that string.

It also could be a defective string. Got another high E string to try?

I have the same problem only mine is the low E string. The saddle is back as far as it could go. I haven't figured it out yet. Normally when I do a setup on the guitar, I set the saddles all the way or almost all the way back because it's easyer when setting the intonation to move the saddles forward but the low E has always been a problem from the day I bought the guitar.(Mexican Strat) I made a bone string nut for it and got rid of the plastic one it came with. I just finished shielding it and adjusted the angle of the neck as well as leveled the frets. Probably next year I do a complete refret on it as well. The low E has me puzzled though. I did everything I could think of. I made it a hard tail then changed it so the bridge is the 1/8 from the body. Cleaned out the neck cavity also. I've had this guitar completely apart and fixed it up nice but I cannot resolve the low E intonation problem. Baffled I am. It has to be something simple that is easily overlooked.

The Clapton sig, has a blocked tremalo and is hard fixed to the body so there is not a gap. I run out of thread on the screw and if I were to simply install a longer screw the saddle highth set screws would run into the bridge screws. I will replace the strings to see if that helps. I appreciate the ideas. If anyone else has a thought I would appreciate it becasue I am stumped. - thanks

It's possible that the pickup is too high, as stated earlier, or possibly the neck needs some relief. A slight trussrod adjustment may take care of it.

It might be that the nut is to too high. I had the same problem but with the low E. Did everything I could, the saddle was all the way back, and the intonation remained the same, no matter what I did. Turned out the gap in the nut for the lower e was too high.

I returned the guitar and awaiting the replacement.

Good luck!

What device (tuner) are you using to check intonation?
