Rob - checking in with other folks is really going the extra mile.

For those interested I did get a chance to pull out "The Stratocaster Chronicles"; Tom Wheeler did interview both George Blanda and Dan Smith about the development of the American Standards. He quoted George about the large route, and George mentioned that at the time they were designing these so many players were into atmospheric playing (like Andy Summers and The Edge) that they felt the large route added to the funky, airy position 2 and 4 tones for that type of playing.

I guess keeping up on all this minutia appeals to that frustrated journalist inside me.

Awwww man.......my memory loses. I checked with a couple of others who were there with me and are still around...and actually even more involved with thre birth of the American Standards and Strat Plus's (ok namely George Blanda and Jack Schwarz)
and yes they began with the Swimming pool route in Corona. You were right.
Thanks for being around to assist and whack me when i need it!! Cheers rob

Thanks, Rob.
Good stuff.
I bet there were some transition guitars built in Fullerton and shipped from Corona
and may have different build orders. Also, some early Corona guitars built and
shipped from Corona may have Fullerton influences.

Love the detective work on the transitional products. Toppscore :)

Just wanted to take a moment and thank you and everyone else who was at Fender during the '80s. The American Std. and Strat Plus are really great guitars.

I'm really glad to see that Fender is building guitars for every price point. From the new Squire "Classic Vibe" and Pawn Shop models to the top of the line instruments, Fender is really doing a great job.

Just remember, it is all speculation.
Some guesses are pretty good with reason.

But But But . . . . there's always exceptions . . . .
new deceptions constantly being disposed ~ frequently . . . .

Fender amp owners conveniently “mis-remember” when confronted with
newly discovered artifacts by Fender archeologist on a daily basis.

I just want to confirm. With the introduction of the new plant at Corona and the American Stander Strat, came the swimming pool route. The body below is from June 16th of 1987. Also came the 2-point bridge and the micro-tilt adjuster. If I could pick up that Strat, in decent shape, for $550, I would jump on it in a heart beat!

One thing I noticed on the early AS Strats in 87 and a few of the first Plus' was the way the bridge mounted to the body. The first ones used a screw in stud for the bridge pole. By late 87 Fender moved over to the brass insert ferrule with a steel screw in post. See below.

If your asking about the vintage white body shown in the previous post? No. That is a mid 1987 American Standard Strat. I do have a couple really early Plus' but not that early. I think the oldest I have seen is like august of 87, and that was some picts sent to me my a guy.

Ok, I picked it up Saturday morning, brought it into work for a good cleaning, new strings, and all that, so here she is. I am a little bit interested to know more about that large tone pot. I thought they came on the plus. Has the detent at the 5 position, any info would be appreciated.

The tone pot gets me...Everything seems like it had been in there a long time, pots numbering puts them at 1987. Couldn't get a good clear closeup. Neck is stamped John Cruz 1988(isn't he a masterbuilder now?), body is also stamped1998 O. Pallares (which I believe is Oscar Pallares from custom shop). All looks authentic, I've just never seen a tone pot like that. Is it the tbx pot I hear about?

Fender introduced the TBX tone control on the American Standard Strats and the Strat Plus Series, which was connected to both the middle and bridge pickups. Older Strats had the lower tone control connected to the middle pickup and the bridge pickup was bypassed all together. This newer design gives a person a lot more tone capabilities.

The TBX is not an active system, as some believe, (using a battery as found on the 25db boost on the Clapton Strats), but it is simply a stacked set of potentiometer that cuts either treble or bass, where as the standard tone control only cuts the treble. So we have: T (treble) B (bass) X (Cut) thus TBX. When you turn this knob, you can feel a halfway point (detent)—this is tone neutral (#5 on the knob!). This TBX control gives the bridge and middle pickup a unique variety of sounds! When the 5-way switch is in the 4th position, by turning the tone control you can get a bell like sound to a honking out-of-phase mid-range sound. Put the switch in position #2 and, you get a quack, or a hollow twang! The 1st tone control is a standard Fender 250 k potentiometer as is the volume control.

thanks for the info xhefri. I'm quite happy with the purchase. She cleaned up really nice. Pretty cool with the whole Fender history, and to have John Cruz, and Oscar Pallares having something to do with this guitar is very cool in my book.
