Hi guys! I am on the look out for my next guitar. This is what I want, either a fat strat with low output humbucking pickups or an SG Standard with low output humbucking pickups. I play classic rock, classic hard rock, 80s rock, lots of 90s risk and hard rock plus grunge, and some modern alt rock. The band I am in is a 90s cover band called Pearl Garden and we cover things like Smashing Pumkins, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, STP, Tool, Alice in Chains, Matthew Sweet, Radio Head, Bush, REM, Weezer, Sound Garden, Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers and lots more both softer and harder.

Amps are Splawn Street Rod, PWE Event Horizon, and Bogner 20th Shiva.

Current guitars are a 2003 Fender Highway One strat with stock single coil pickups, Gibson SG with hot pickups, Gibson LP Standard with hot pickups, PRS CE-22 with hot Dragon pickups and 2012 Fender American Standard Telecaster which is stock.

Thanks.

Well, what are you most comfy with?
A Gibson or a fender?
I personally would probably replace the pickups with low out put
pus on the standard lp

I don't know, I like both. I would really have another PRS CE-22 but too expensive right now.

I tried low output pickups in my LP and prefer higher output in this LP. They are 1989 Gibson, Bill Lawrence designed HB-L and HB-R pickups. Bridge is 13.8 K.

I was thinking fat strat with Duncans, like the 59 or '78 or even Rio Grande BBQ or SG Standard with 57 Classics. Decisions. :)

I really like the 2008 and later Strats. Do the fat strats have a swimming pool route?

Unless you're a ultra high gain player, even with humbuckers those two will not sound the same. The Gibson is all Mahogany while the strat has Ash/Alder and Maple. Plus there is a scale length difference as well. All of those affect the tone besideds just the different bridge and other construction considerations.

In a nut shell, the Gibson will be more bottom end and dark. The Fender will be a little brighter and have a bit more bite...

Get the Strat, you won´t have to change the guitar on stage (maybe if it´s out of tune). The SG is an awesome guitar but kind of a one trick pony - it sounds awesome but you hear that specific voice.
The Strat is more versatile you can get all those sounds you need out of the Strat alone (because of the low output humbuckers).

Cheers,
Robin

I have to be honest, if money were no object, I would get another PRS CE-22My 1994 alder/maple topped CE-22 is crazy good, sounds great, stays in perfect tune always, plays great, comfortable, well balanced, versatile. Mine has Dragon pickups with the rotary switch which are hot! I might save a little extra and get another CE-22, but this time get a mahogany/maple topped with 3 way toggle and install low output pickups. Hmmmmm

Well, if you are after another PRS and can't afford it, there's two ways: either save more money for a while to get the PRS or get yourself a Strat.
The PRS 's sound is somewhere in between the LP and the Strat.

Since you have an LP already, an SG would do pretty much the same and will be darker (lower end) in sound than the PRS.

I guess the Strat humbucker tone will get you closer to a PRS than the SG would and it is way more versatile than an SG!

Since you cover different bands, you'll need different sounds which means you're better off with a Strat.

SGs are great but they can only do ONE SOUND, that's it. I always wanted an SG but in the end I never bought one for two reasons: I don't like the bridge and they're not versatile enough.

the fit and finish on the lower end gibbys has been lacking a little lately, so don't decide until you play both side by side. this may just be the ones in my area of the world but I remember them feeling ALLOT better years ago.

For what it is worth, my PRS CE-22 is darker than both my LP and SG. Strats feel awkward for me, so may go the SG or PS route. :)

Strange, but well, every guitar has its own soul. I'm not too familiar with PRS, played only 2 of them and they both were as described, somewhere in between LP and Strat.

I have an old Highway One strat that is very resonant. So much so, that I may get another and install a humbucker into the bridge slot! Then I will eventually get another SG. My favorite guitars tend to be LP Standards, SGs, PRS CE-22, strats and teles. :)
