Hi All
I know you must get inundated with posts like this
but .... here goes

I have been offered a strat that apparently comes with history
and I cant find anything to authenticate the guitar
although the story background sounds true I still need to know
that I will be buying a genuine article
the story behind it is ... It was owned by one of Bring me the horizon who then sold it to
the son of one of the members of Saxon which could be true
and I have emailed both bands so far with no answer but it does come from the birmingham area which makes the story believable (sorta)

but I have a serial number that I cant trace to anywhere

says on the head stock Fender stratocaster affinity
on the back it says crafted in China with s/n CY99089952
can anyone help me identify this guitar please
I would much appreciate it :D :?

sounds to me like a squier affinity (the very bottom end of anything squier makes) that somebody has put a fender decal on.

ive never heard of a 'fender affinity'.

Sounds like a "pimped" Squier Affinity to me and sorry if I offend any Squier players but I cannot imagine at all, that a professional band would touch a stock Squier!

And if so, I have my own philosophy about guitars like that:

Even if some famous/popular/ locally popular/whatever guy owned the guitar, it's still just a Squier.
Unless you're a convinced fan of that star and would sell your soul just to shake hands with him/her, I wouldn't pay a cent more for this guitar than for any other guitar of the same model & brand!

But that's probably just me!

I must admit: if I would get Rick Parfitt's (Status Quo) Tele offered, I'd probably would be quite a bit more willing to part from some more bucks!

Back to topic: Fender doesn't make Affinity models.

In the beginning, Squier was a Fender series. Maybe it's a "Fender Squier Series Affinity Strat" from the first days but I'm not that familiar with early Squiers.
I just know that Fender relatively quickly made Squier a Fender Branch office (company daughter) and they surely knew why.

After Squier production moved from Japan to Indonesia/China/whatever far east, they simply weren't the old Squiers anymore.

Anyhow .... I'm pretty sure that it's just a pimped Squier with Fender logo, nothing special and certainly not worth more than any other Squier which hasn't been in the hands of some second or third class rock band.

That's just my personal opinion.

BTW, pictures might help identifying the axe!

If possible, please post detailed pictures, otherwise it's almost impossible to make certain statements.

Well, after a quick google search I have found NO PICTURES of a Squier Series Affinity.

I assume it's a Squier with a fake Fender logo.
There's ONLY squiers that say "Affinity" on the headstock.

Most people advertise their Squiers as Fenders because it says "Squier by Fender" on the headstock. One must be aware that they're still two separate companies with very different quality.

It's like calling a "Mini Cooper" a BMW just because Austin Mini is now owned by BMW.
A Mini Cooper still is NO BMW, no matter if BMW owns the company.

The Fender Squier Affinity is the 2nd lowest model of Squier guitars Fender makes. There is a Modern Player Series that is also made in China that can be easily altered to confuse people into believing they have an American Highway 1 or American Special. The Affinities usually have a narrow, thin neck, and a thin body.... I wouldn't pay more than $100 US for a near mint model. Now the Squier Standard or Vintage Modified are much better made and worth the money if you pay $150 or less for it (used).

What's the lowest? The Bullet? I'm just curious. Thanks!

Affinity is a step below the Bullet however I have used both for builds with success which demanded that the Bullet and Affinity had to be at a certain quality for materials..
I'll post pics to illustrate...

This below is the end result, Wilkinson Vintage Trem, Carvin HII and M22 pups, neck refinished as well as redressed frets, Grover Mini Rotomatics to be installed once finish is cured..
Still some finish detail as far countersinking screws and final detailing...
That is a Candy Apple Red Finish and the pick guard will be changed to a Dark Pearl Black.

This below is what it started as, however it was just a body and neck ( with the W term as it had been a friends project at a guitar shop which we traded....

This is the other, which began life as a Squier Bullet, again this was rebuilt with vintage single pups, Gotoh HB with single to dual switch, TBX tone pots, Push/Pull Vol. Carvin tuners ( had them for a long time) Fender string thru hard tail...Most of the details are in my Build threads so I won't take up more space and recap anymore than necessary.

I thought I had some pics of the Bullet as it was initially.. A twin HB Squier Strat...
Point is these are not junk, they are at a very affordable price point and if you know or can get them reworked, make excellent gigging guitars which one is not afraid to bring out....

Just for the sake of the argument, Squier is a Fender owned company, thereby is a Fender thru lineage, Squier was a way for Fender to get a foot into the japanese market and compete with the then excellent copy reproductions....
