found a pic of one of my mates playing guitar, and as he cant remember what this guitar was im asking here.

its pre digital photos, so not great quality, but it looks to me like it says fender on the headstock. id say the photo is probably early to mid '90's.

so, is this a strat, and what is it if so ?

I'm not sure it's a strat. Hard to tell from the photo. Looks like it has a top binding. I suppose there's been a few strats with binding.

Looks like it was fun.

When were they made? Having a think the photo might be from later than I first thought. Possibly 10-15 years ago instead.

also looks like hes missing the bridge pickup ? unless they did a version with a black pickup and i just cant see it. or he took it out.

dug this post up as i saw the guitar in question yesterday, but unfortunately couldnt get any pics as my phone was dead.

definitely a fender, with gold fender lettering. not spaghetti type, a bit thicker than that.

bridge pickup was an EMG type humbucker. he says it was in there from new, im not so sure. bridge had been reaplaced with a tokai 6 screw trem, dont know whether the original bridge was a 6 screw or one of those funky japanese design trems fender used to do.

the back of the guitar is not finished in sunburst, just stained a single light browny colour.

i think the guitar is japanese, couldnt see any indication of country of origin anywhere, the only number was on the neckplate and it was L***** (5 digits). i think if it was US made, it would have said so somewhere very obviously.

unfortunately the neck laqcuer was peeling all over the place and needed new frets. i wanted to buy it soon as i saw the photo all that time ago, let alone seeing it yesterday. he said no, repeatedly. i will keep trying.

before the strat came out he also dug out his dads '77 tele. it was gorgeous, hardly played, ashtray still attatched, the colour was awesome, it was a burst colour, but it was really pale greeny brown, all original. i said i wanted that aswell, but thats family heirloom i think............
