Hello eveyone,

I have looked into purchasing a John Mayer Sig Strat, and I have noticed that the Back Tremelo plate is not installed on the guitar much like the Eric Johnson Signature, can any one tell me why this is? does it benefit the sound at all? I have a 62 hot rod strat and I removed the cover and plugged it into my Fender twin and I could not tell the difference, Any info is greatly appreciated on the removal of the tremelo cover of info on the John Mayer Sig stratocaster!

Thanks again

TJ

there have been several threads on this.

it does alter the tone, and it also makes it more comfortable to play.

The only possible impact on sound would be the level of "reverb" you'd get from the springs and that would be missing if the guitar was up against your body!

I'm forever taking mine on and off to changing strings, etc.

since the tone of the guitar comes from the body and neck woods vibrating, anything that you attach to the guitar will affect the sound somewhat. so screwing a plastic cover onto the back will change the sound. its not the most drastic change, but there is a change.

Let's hear a recording of the effect.

I doub't that you could hear a difference on a recording... all things being equal.

My point exactly. I don't think the "difference" exists except as a symptom of the unreliability of human perception.

human perception is unreliable, so maybe that can explain why I, and many other people, believe that there is a difference in tone. but, if that is true, than the unreliability could also explain why many people cannot hear the difference.

really, whether you can hear the difference in tone or not, the physics of how a guitar produces sound makes it at least seem probable that there is a difference.

Not when you're talking about how an ELECTRIC guitar produces sound.

I'm telling you, electric guitar tone is like a religion...

Why don't several of you try an experiment and report back. It would be interesting to hear personal opinions on this.

I tried it both ways, I didn't notice anything different. I wear belts some with buckles and I would rather have the trem cover on.

Easier to change strings on the fly.
