ok i know that i was going to make a strat build to fix my DIY jitters, but i discovered that i don't need to get it done yet!!!! my mom just revealed that she still has my first guitar... an academy strat knockoff that i have never used since i got my vm strat i even had a name for her my good ol maya... my plan is to fix her up with a new nut and change all the bridge screws... i'm also gonna shield the buzz out of her i'm sick of that noise... i know she ain't what you guys consider a real strat but she's real to me

my real question is for all the european guitarrists... where can i get a bone nut that isn't cut? and where can i get bullet strat bridge saddles?

Hi Ralf: for bone nuts you could try one of these:

http://www.wdmusic.co.uk/category/Hardw ... les,b.html

http://www.allparts.uk.com/online-shop/ ... 41_38.html

http://www.thomann.de/gb/cat_GF_saddles ... _PG_2.html

http://www.touchstonetonewoods.co.uk/pr ... ddles-107/

...amongst others.

Or, if you're up to slotting a bone nut then I'm sure you're capable of of making one from scratch too. So get yourself one of these -

- and then have at it! Perhaps with a little help from Ceri's guide to bone nut making:

Good luck - C

We are all going hunting some cows, we don´t have to kill we just need to cut

Here you can buy bone nuts and the tools (files etc.) at Rockinger, Germany.
Great stuff and cool guys.

You only have to hunt for a local Butcher who will be able to supply you with all sorts of bones.

Wait!!.. So a bone nut is really made from a bone?
So you really do make the nut from a bone! It's not just the word for a nut.
Damn, I feel stupid.

Hi Ralf. Slow getting back to this thread - sorry.

Sensible questions. Most bone nuts come from cow bones, no doubt because they are easily available and large enough to get a worthwhile number of blanks from. Once you start cutting up a bone you discover there isn't necessarily as much usable material in there as you might think, because of its shape:

Also, there is an idea that you should use a leg bone because it has been carrying the weight of the animal and so is the most dense and hard. I don't know if that's real, but as you can see leg bones are what I use.

Far as raw or cooked is concerned; I've done both. The one I was showing my cat in the earlier photo was cooked for a few hours to remove the flesh and is one and the same as in the picture in this post, above. That made some nice, clean white-ish nuts and they seem to perform fine.

There is also a belief that I've heard Dan Erlewine invoking that raw bones that have been aged outdoors make good nuts. He uses bones his dog has been chewing for months in the yard, and I sometimes get similar ones left on my doormat as gifts from my neighbour's dog (teeth marks and all):

Image

Aged raw bones bleached in the sun make more characterful looking nuts but I don't think I detect a meaningful difference in their hardness or sound, so I think you can use whichever is easier for you.

As to pigs and other animals: well, people use walrus tusk and even fossilised mammoth tusk. And on this thread Forum user Tomyyy showed himself making nuts from Canadian caribou:

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=72624

I'm sure I remember someone saying they use camel bone too, but I can't find the thread.

So I expect pig will be fine as well. It's a heavy animal so probably has nice strong, dense leg bones, which is what you want. All you need is a bit of bone big enough.

Are you eating a leg of pork this weekend?

Good luck - C

yeah ceri that was the plan ;)... though i just discovered that i'm heading to toronto for a few weeks... ;) parts are cheaper there so when i get back i'll have the stuff ready to fix up maya (and probably come back from a major GAS attack who knows what i'll come back with) and if i don't get the parts there i'll give this nut idea a shot ;)

Okely-dokely - have a nice trip.

I'm sure you can manage making a bone nut for yourself. But if you want help you're welcome to give me a shout. A nut for a Strat is something we can easily accomplish by post, if you like. (No charge or anything like that, don't worry. Just Forum friendliness.)

Cheers - C
