I went to GC tonight and played a Worn Brown Sudio LP. I was very pleasantly surprised. It was bell-like with a thunderous low end. It was set up perfecly. I think I really want one. I've been looking at the LP Tribute series but I've heard some nasty things about the finish chipping off. I haven't been a big fan of what Gibson calls "worn" (I had a Faded SG worn brown), but I really liked this guitar and could see adding to my arsenal. There is one on CL asking $700. I'm sure I could get him down to $650. $200 saved compared to the regular Tribute. Half of what you'd pay for a Studio Deluxe. And for a new Standard or Historic? Fugedaboutit.

Always worth buying a guitar you really like playing in the store. Most of the my favorite guitars are ones that I played and fell in love with on the spot.

I just traded my '03 LP for a used PRS McCarty.

Go to GC used gear site, you should be able to find one for near $500. I think have a tonal variety is a good thing. I have my strat, Heritage H140, and Epi Dot Deluxe.... Just need a tele (not really), to complete my tonal needs.

tonal diversity is a good thing. there are sounds a gibson will get that strat's/tele's can't do and vice/versa. Look at any touring musician out there right now and even if they endorse a particular guitar brand, they often use other brands on stage because they like the sound of this other brand and can't get it with the guitars obtained through their endorsement deals.

For example, Metallica may have an endorsement with ESP/LTD but can often be seen on stage with Gibsons and Fenders.

Hammitt has a signature Gibson V, so that doesn't surprise me...

if you found a good one jump on it because from what i have seen lately there aren't many.

sorry to stray from the specific topic,
but is it just me or has anyone else noticed a decrease in the quality of the entry Gibson's lately?
I picked up several at guitar center Saturday and anything under 2000 felt cheap to me especially the les Paul studios with the P90's. the paint edge line on the neck feels like a clif that drops onto the edge of the fingerboard  and the studios in general i picked up lately felt a little rougher than 8 or so years ago. not as "finished"

aren't they made with maple boards that they actually toasted in an oven now?

Spinnrade...Totally agree with you on this...I got one of these not too long ago, for $500 w/ Gibson hardshell case. They are great guitars, love the tone of those Burstbucker pickups. Here is a pic of mine to help with your GAS!

Enjoy.

all I would suggest is to replace the black plastic with creme/white... Makes a huge difference!

I have the Cherry version and it's sweet. The satin neck is awesome even if the neck profile is a little thick for my tastes.

I have noticed a decrease in the entry level models. Not so much anything under $2000 but definately the SG Specials and LP Studios. Flying V's, Explorers and SG Standards are all under $2000 and are great guitars.

They are using baked maple fretboards on the less expensive models now since the US government has been busting their balls about the paperwork from their rosewood. From what I hear the maple fretboards are not bad but it will definately have some impact on the tone - for lifelong rosewood users like myself it could be a deal breaker and some will either save up the money to get a model that uses actual rosewood while some will go to a brand that uses rosewood on guitars in the same price range.

the LP custom classic and (es335)midtown classic are very nice. neither has a rosewood fretboard. the 2012 studio is nice, but a little pricey

That Baked Maple Fretboard is exactly why I bought a used one from '08. I played one with the baked maple and while doing so, I couldn't quite put my finger on what was not quite right tone wise...then the salesman asked how I liked the baked maple fingerboard and then it hit me...that is what I didn't like about it. The tone was very bright, too bright for Les Paul IMHO.

FWIW

T2. It is amazing how a fretboard makes noticable sound/tone differences.
Still the string goes from metal fret to metal saddle, Knowingly the body neck
and fretboard wood density make obvious important tones and sustain ability,
but the fretboard? It's so thin. My guitars are so different that I'll never
experience fretboard differences.

BTW, T2, is it possible there were other factors as well as the fretboard
to make the guitar "brighter"? Just wondering. Toppscore
