Hi, i just bought a new American Standard Stratocaster 2012 from an online dealer.
I really like the sound and feel, but there are a lot and really deep Scratches on my Rosewood Fretboard.
Currently i have 5 guitars/basses with a RW-FB and none of them looks like this one.
Is this still the natural Grain of the Wood or is the Fretboard cracking?
If this is not normal Grain i still have the free return option to the online dealer.

That's what rosewood looks like.

Deal with it. Or not.

that is a typical pattern with rosewood. the grain will vary widely between pieces, even from the same log. its just cosmetic so its nothing to worry about. and eventually the grime from playing will fill it is anyways

Yep. I see nothing out of the ordinary there.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

If you play some really old Strats from the early 60s you can really see the grain. There's nothing out of the ordinary here.

Hi gerhadtinga, welcome to the Forum.

Ditto what the others say; that's just normal rosewood grain.

Arguably, it might be a touch dried out - which is natural too. If you felt like it next time you change the strings you could get a drop or two, no more, of mineral oil (sold at guitar shops as lemon oil) on a cloth and give that fingerboard a wipe over with it. Get it so that it looks wet and shiny with the oil and then wipe as much of it as you can off again.

But then again, if you don't feel like it it probably is not necessary at the moment. In most cases you want to be doing the lemon/mineral oil treatment every year or so in the way I described, just to keep the rosewood from drying out too much. More often is a waste of time: it won't achieve anything.

Anyhow. Nice looking guitar. Play and enjoy.

Cheers - C

I agree with previous posters - looks like normal rosewood grain. Most of the rosewood fretboards I've seen look like this. That's what made me wonder when I took delivery of my Custom Shop Strat - that rosewood board has NO voids in it whatsoever. It almost doesn't look like rosewood!

Add a little fretboard treatment or lemon oil to the fretboard and rock on my friend!

Yes normal. Ditto with Ceri on the mineral oil...FIY lemon oil is just mineral oil with lemon scent! I just buy plain old mineral oil at the local drug store for about a buck for a 12oz bottle, and lasts forever. Don't waste your money on scented oil, or that expensive stuff they sell in the music shop.

Hi all,

I bought this Fender MIM on ebay last week for £358 (~480$). It arrived yesterday. The guitar was definitely neglected for a long time but was still fine until I noticed this crack towards the truss rod.

Question, would you return this guitar? I have a few days to decide and I could have a new one adding just 20% of what I paid.

Your pic doesn't show on the forum - the IMG command works if you get the pic address, starting with http/https and enging with .jpg.

Ebay has a myriad of MIM Strats around that price class, so returning this one and choosing another might be wise. I don't think that crack affects the guitar in any way, but it may mess with your mind forever.
