I have a Standard HSS Strat and a Classic Series '50s Strat and the switch in the Classic Series feels more expensive than the switch on my Standard. They both do the job just fine, but the CS switch feels higher in quality. I don't know if the American Strats use the same switch or not, but it wouldn't surprise me.

I have a FSR Ash MIM that has the factory shielding paint in it just like my MIA Strats have. Granted this is a "special run" from 2006 but it is a MIM.

I haven't had any of my 2 Mex Strats or my Mex Tele apart so I don't know if they have shielding or not. I suspect my Classic Series '50s has shielding as it's a higher end Mexican Strat.

Quote:

I have stated before and will say again that the MIM's being made today are as good as the original Strats produced in the fifties and early sixties. The pickups being the exception. Then again my FSR had Tex-Mex pups in it when new. Why are they called Standard Strats? Fender wants you to forget where the guitar was made, after all it's called a "Standard" Strat now, not a Mexican Strat. Some models cost as much as a new MIA did just a few years ago. Check the prices on the Deluxe and re-issues or the BIG PLAYERS NAMED ones.

Some of the players don't like the no-load pots. Just not original. Some don't like a tone control on the bridge pickup. Spice of life and all that you see. It's a whole new ballgame today. Cheap just wont sell well in the long run. MIM's are not cheap nor cheaply made anymore. I don't think they ever where myself, except when CBS owned the company that is.

They are damn good guitars. A good Mexican Fender is at least 95% as good as a good American Fender. Some Mexican Fenders are better than some American Fenders. I'd put my guitars up against any guitar. They definitely play better than the $2000+ Gibsons that I've played.

A Classic Series Stratocaster is the best for the money. It has the proper neck profile and radius. I traded mine for a hand wired Princeton Reverb.

I can't argue with that. I've read many posts over on the Tele board that said the Classic Series Teles are the best Teles being made today. The Strats are just as good.

Just keep her.
Love her.
Nurture her.
Kiss her.
Touch her.
Stroke her.
Caress her.

and once a day, tell her,
"Hola, Senorita! Es muy bonita y linda!!! Adios you sweet muchacha :)"

MIM & MIA are both good guitars,of course you have different pick ups and no. of frets, switches. But the biggest difference is if you ever go to sell one.A buyer for some reason will NOT pay the same price for a MIM as they will a MIA,plus go look on Ebay or any music store there's a huge difference in price if you ever try to sell a MIM you won't get your money back!

I believe older 1980s/1990s have more.
Check it out.
But good to know MIMs are available.

The MIM Standard and Deluxe Series Strats (and Teles) have always had 21 frets. The Blacktop series (HH and H-S-H) have 22 frets and so does the new Cabronita Tele. Also worth mentioning is that the Mexican-made Acoustasonic Strat had 22 frets as do the new Roland-ready Strats. Wonder if the Standard series will switch over to 22 frets as well.

As far a frets go, I have been studying the Fender HM Heavy Metal Stratocaster
and the Fender Showmaster Stratocaster, both with 24 frets.

How many frets do Fender Mustangs have?

The HM was not a Mexican made....it started off MIA and then I think they started making them in Japan (there was even a Squier version). The Showmaster (Highway1) was American made. The closest thing to an HM that came out of Mexico was the Prodigy.

Mexican vs USA
The HM was USA made with MIJ roots.

How about the Showmaster ~ anybody know where the Showmaster was made????

I got to play both models back to back yesterday as well as rosewood vs. maple necks and the differences were almost none. What I found out is I would be happy with either but I also found out that I love that maple neck! Would I buck up to buy a MIA over a MIM? Yes, if I could afford it only because it would be my choice. Would I feel slighted in any way by buying a MIM? Not at all and I may end up going that way anyway!

There is more to the difference than just pickups and switches. Tuning keys, fret board, fret types, rolled edges, staggered magnets in the pickups, the sound from the different pickups available, the bridge itself. Some have good sustain, others have great sustain. Being able to bend the strings and not have to tune again after every song. Hold and play them both, and the difference is huge. Not to mention one will deppreciate in value, and the other will appreciate in value. Try getting your money back for a MIM when you want to trade or sell to get something else. You find used MIM everywhere you look, but a MIA is harder to come by. I would buy a used MIA over a new MIM any day. When I upgrade the parts, I have a MIA customized to what I wanted.

Hi, BrittB ~ If you are talking about MIA Standard Strats and MIM Standard Strats,
IMHO, PRICE is the difference.

On the reseller market, low end MIAmerican Strats are fairly low priced, anyway.
So, get the lowest priced Fender Factory under Warrany Guitar that you like :)
