Hi Guys, I just got a new humbucker from BKP, the great VHII, its an awsome humbucker, I really like it but I still find my bridge position a bit too bright.
I've been to do some mods before to get a tone control for the humbucker, there are some ppl that makes the tone control work for both middle and bridge but I would like to do different, I would like to have middle and neck with one tone control and the other only for the bridge...that would be easy if I wanted any pot value for it but as you expect i want to use 500k pots to HB and 250k pots for SC...
Any suggestions?
Whats best?
Should i keep it like it is now 500k only on volume?
I also would put a superswitch if that works...

Cmon guys I invested a lot I would like to fix this...

Neck...Pot 1(250k)
Neck, Middle...Pot 1(250k)
Neck Middle and Bridge(would like to hear opinions)
Bridge, Middle...Pot 2(500k)
Bridge...Pot 2(500k)

I would check Guitar Fetish.
Find humbuckers with similar specs you desire.
Email your questions as to their pickup specs.
Then, you can either buy the GF pickup
or try to emulate your pickup with GF's.

Howdy!

Congrats on the BK humbucker! I hear lots of good things about them.

You could use what I like to call the "Martian Method" and go for a 500k pot for the Master Volume and use a couple of 450k* resistors, wired to the 5 way switch terminals used for the single coil pups to trick them into seeing a 250k (ish) pot.

It's no problem to wire the tone controls as you requested. I'd use a 250k pot for single coils and a 500 for the BK Humbucker.

Personally I go for Neck and Bridge in position 3 over N+M+B. You'll want to pick up a super switch for that though.

If this is something your still interested in doing, let us know and we'll go from there!

Cheers!

Andy

Edit: *Sorry! That should be 470k!

What is up with you? Your eighty year old closed-minded wrinkled brain
sees nothing past your stuffed opinionate old thoughts.
Again, closed minded, as usual

To the OP.
I've purchased from Guitar Fetish, twice. They are extremely knowledgable, modern,
current, and helpful. Not like old narrow minded minimal optioned point of view.
You want a brighter pickup. Check Guitar Fetish out, as well.

There are choices. Either test & retest and trial & error with guess work ~ fine.

Or, check out Guitar Fetish for similar pickups and review which components GFS used.
Email them and ask ~ they are helpful.
Guitar Fetish helped me out with many options and possibilities.
Their prices are great. They were recommend.

Before fiddling around with various components, pots or caps,
or, before screwing around, check or ask Guitar Fetish.

I get the feeling he doesn't want a brighter pickup.

Andy, just ignore the knuckle head...he knows not of what he speaks...and is just looking to increase his post count. Of course you called him out for not reading the post and he starts in with the name calling...but to here him tell it, he NEVER starts anything.

He seems to think if you have experience you are closed minded, again he knows very little about REAL hands on work and experience. He is all blah, blah, blah.

I feel like we've been down this road before
Andy interesting, I have to check out that "Martian Method" Op will find out soon enough who to get info from, and who to ignore.

In my experience the higher the pot value the brighter the sound. so a 500k might not do what you want, so i would go with a 250k to roll some brightness off. also changing the tone cap to a higher value for the bridge can make your tone control tame the brightness more.

Sorry about all this guys. I didn't realise you've all been through this sort of stuff with him already. Kind of feel a little bad for stirring the pot...

Worth a peek if you find yourself with a HSS config and want to balance your pot values.

Martian helped me out with a diagram for a user in the pickup forum a little while back...

Resistors on the terminals used by the single coils then to ground. Simple yet effective. Tap Martian for a better explanation as I can't verbally do it justice! :D

Cheers!

+1, Andy.

As I recollect from Martian's excellent dissertation, the added resistors are there to "trick" the single-coils into behaving when used with the 500K volume pot.

Rawk on!
