I'm considering moving all my gear into my garage. Is storing a guitar inside a hardcase in an uninsulated garage a bad idea? That is, because of the temperature changes.

Where do you live, and what are the temp and humidity extremes? If there are big differences in both factors through the year, the guitars will suffer for it.

+1!

Tread carefully in this regard.

What would be the temp and humidity IN your garage ?

Best IMO is 20 to 50 % Hum . Temp is less important than H but should be almost the same all the time.

We've been experiencing an endless series of days in the 90s here in the Midwest. If you are dealing with extreme temps and an average garage, storing guitars in your garage, even in a hardcase, might well be the kiss of death. It won't take but a day or two and your case-stored guitar will be matching the ambient temperature and the slow slide to relative humidity will soon follow.

as the others said weather is key, if you live in a place like me where it is currently in the upper 90's to low 100's with 78% -80% humidity..... keep them inside

IMO any guitar you care about should be kept in your home and NOT the garage... unless of course your home and garage share the exact same environmental properties.

On top of that I would consider a garage (as usually) a less secure location than your living quarters. Hate to have any gear lost to theft!

Thanks for the input guys. The reason i was looking to store my stuff in the garage is so i can dedicate a space for practice away from the wife and kids. My concern was that the drastic change in temp in my garage would ruin my guitars, and i guess i was right. I dont get to play them as much as i would like to, and the only good things about that is they stay in excellent condish by keeping them stored inside their cases. So i guess storing them in a potentially harmful enviroment would justified be stupid.

Guess ill have to wait til my kids move out, so i can have me a jammin room.

jest keep everything set up out there and leave the guitars in the closet or under the bed until you need them. not as convenient but safer.

If you store your guitars, cases or not, in the garage.....I promise you this :
1. Your guitar's frets will tarnish (turn green)
2. Your setup will go to crap, requiring frequent adjustments
3. You will likely crack the finish due to wood / finishes expanding at different rates
4. You very well may ruin the guitar (glue seam separation, warping/cracking wood, rusted parts and corroded electronics)

If you aren't being kicked out of the house by the " 'Ol Lady " , then there is no good reason to ever store an instrument outside of the actual climate controlled home!!!!!

 -feelin' sorry for you  Been there ,too  Now the kids are out (the women , too :P )
-and the house is flowing w guitars  Even used to have band rehearsals in here a while ago!
Except getting rid of your family , your options would be :
1.Park your car outside- Insulate the garage, and make it as good climatic as inside the house -and PLAY  or....
2.Buy yourself some practicing amp w headphone output + headphones and PLAY
Best wishes

Nice! Looking at the wood on the wall and ceiling, was that a sauna you converted to a more important use?
