Any assistance is appreciated. I have a 1987 Strat I bought used from a kid in 1991. I have played it as my main guitar since then and I am looking for info about it's value.

A little info: Like I said, my main guitar all these years, so the road wear is obvious. I replaced the stock pickups with Fender Tex-Mex pickups. The neck was sanded down on the back to remove the gloss and strap locks were installed. The finish is also faded to a yellowish color instead of white (my guess is bar smoke). So, this guitar is not by any means a collectors item.

The neck shows H. Gastelum and the date 12/18/87.

Any idea what this guitar would be worth? Or is it even worth selling?

Thanks!

Well I will take a stab at this...condition, not great, would say a 5 on a 1 to 10 scale...frets look like they are in pretty decent shape...so I would say $500. American Standard Strats are very common, so no collectability to the model, although as a first year model it might have had some sellability if it was dead mint. Just my thoughts.

If it has been your main guitar all these years, why would you want to sell it? Seems its only value would be to you as a trusted friend for all these years.

I say keep and continue to play it.

Thanks so much for the input.

I have another Strat that is a 92 I think that I absolutely love and play way more than this one now and rarely pick this one up any more.

BUT... you said something that has struck a chord (no pun intended) with me....

"Seems its only value would be to you as a trusted friend for all these years"

You know.. you're right... Even if it was worth something this Strat saw me in a lot of phases in life and it would be hurtful to part with it. Thanks again for the sober reminder!

Not to totally hijack this thread, but it seems to me that many older American Standard Strats are overpriced. I've been checking on C/L and e-Bay and the asking prices for many of these guitars are often within $50 - $100 of the price a new/current version which is in many ways an improved guitar. Maybe an '87 American Standard may be worth a little more as a collector's piece because it was the first year for the series, but otherwise they tend to be priced too high IMHO.

I too would say keep it and treasure it. My oldest guitar rarely gets used anymore, but she has seen me through countless gigs and adventures, and I would NEVER part with her!

Do you have a musical son or daughter who might inherit it someday? What a great legacy to pass on that beauty!

Hi. 1987 MIA Strats in good shape go for $800(+). Your's has "issues"
that make it more of a keeper Strat than a Strat to sell for a low amount.

Sometimes you gotta say, "I'd rather keep it than sell it for that!"

But, on the other hand, just get rid of it and take whatever you can get.
Then buy a newer/better Strat. You'll better know what you like and don't like.

Believe me, there've been equipment I've sold and felt real bad about it;
but, when the new one arrives, the old one is not missed as you'd think.

Personally, with the back-side of your Strat's neck not looking good, the faded paint,
nicks & scratches, and probably 25 years of fretwear, I'd sell the Strat and let
someone else rebuild it as a project or as a real working man's player guitar.

Take care. Toppscore :)

+1!

People pay stoopid money for that "relic" look.

Were the guitar mine, I'd repair/refurbish/restore any functional issues and play it for the next quarter century.

Then pass it on to a relative as an heirloom.

That is exactly what I am thinking... spend a little time with it, fix it up and that trusted friend gets to hang with me a little while longer.

Thanks again everyone.. the responses are exactly what I needed.

He NJB!!!
Treat your guitar like a wife!!!
She looked good to you one way a long time ago.
Now, she has personality and memories for you to love :D

Look at her  Smile are your guitar :D Play with passion  Love it. Marry it

Like Jimmy Soul once stated:
If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty guitar your wife
Go for my personal point of view
Get an ugly guitar to marry you

A pretty guitar makes her husband look small
it very often causes a system fall
As soon as he marrys her then she starts
looking for things that will break his heart
but if you make an ugly guitar your wife
you'll be happy for the rest of your life
An ugly guitar will put peals on that
and she'll always give you a piece of that.

If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty guitar your wife
Go for my personal point of view
Get an ugly guitar to marry you

Don't let your friends tell you you have no taste
go ahead and marry anyway
Her face is ugly her eyes don't match
take it from me shes a better catch

NJB,
That's a nice guitar....If i may suggest pull those Ice Picky tex mex's out of it and give it some nice Pup's and that guitar will be so much nicer to play.......That deserves good Pup's......Tex mex or 80's US pickup's are so Icey you went from the frying pan to the fire...In my experience and i've owned both for a "short" time.... it will transform the thing into you rarely picking up the other one....... I just put don mare super sports rwrp in my 88 and its just sonic gold..... 8)

I have an '88-9 Olympic White American Standard that I paid $500 for. The body's a bit more worn than yours, but I have to agree, $500 is about right. The thing is, you've owned that guitar for 21 years. That's nothing to sneeze at. Everyone wants to fake that aged white finish look but nothing comes close to the real thing. The neck looks sweet but isn't going to mean anything to a potential buyer. You are going to be sad when you sell that thing for less than you want. I'd give the old girl a little tlc; maybe restore the looks to stock, good setup, etc. And I agree about the pickups. Try some SSL-1s or Fender 57/62s. I have 57/62s in my '89 American Standard with rosewood board and the guitar sounds like a million bucks.
