The Sharpie artwork - what a fantastic idea! Do you coat the pickguard with anything to prevent the drawing from smearing or wearing away over time?

That tuxedo maple neck with its black binding and blocks would look way better with a large headstock and black CBS-era decals. :P Beautiful huge-sounding beast, though.

I believe you've installed a push-pull pot to split the humbuckers.

Well, I don't like the big Fender Headstocks, I prefer the smaller ones. Just a matter of taste ;)

The pickups are P90-style PUs from Tonerider, that means they're single coils with a little more output. The small switch between the controls is not connected. It was for coil split when I still had the previous humbuckers installed. Now it's just sitting there disconnected.

Loving the pick guard, the neck looks cool, not my cup of tea.
But the pick guard looks awesome.
Where did you find that one?

I did it myself.
I was kinda bored one evening and simply started drawing after having seen the famous "Sharpie Lamborghini" online. I thought it might be a cool idea to have a sharpie strat but wanted to try painting a pickguard first.
What can I say .... when I was done 2 or 3 hrs later, I liked the outcome.

I like my sharpie pickguard and yes, I'll do more of them.

Yes, it's clearcoated with 1 thin layer of clear paint out of a spray can. After that it got polished to remove possible dust grains which might disturb the clean surface.

THANX FOR ALL YOUR KIND COMMENTS, FOLKS!!! :) :)

Love the 70's style artwork...cool! Reminds me of some of the old Jimi or Doors posters — type artwork. The whole scheme of the guitar is tasteful. Nice job!

You get a 'plus' like that from Jeff, it's quite a feather in your hat. The new guitar has a far better esthetic effect than it's predecessor and really shows off that great scratchplate to it's credit.

Really nice & interesting guitar. Stands out from the crowd! Fantastic pickguard ! I like the writing besides the pots- is it 'Trouble' and 'oil' ? Sweet. Now -enjoy! Play the crap out of it

Thank you! :)

Yes, it says "Trouble" over the volume pot but the "Oil" is in fact just some fantasy symbols which look like "oil" from a little further away. But dang, "Oil" would've been a great idea!! :))))))

Here's a close-up of the pickguard, when it was still mounted to the black strat. I clear-coated it now:

So you did this artwork, man that is a fantastic Dali like job.
That is a way better canvas to showcase ur artwork.

So with cudos on the art [ and a nod to where some of that could fit easily into Pink Floyd inspiration] tell us how you've got that pickguard wired.

Standard wiring. Three way switch with position 1 being the bridge single coil, position 2 (middle) with both single coils hum free, position 3 with just the neck single coil.
The mini switch is without function.
One Trouble control (volume), one master Oil control (tone). @asgeirman

The P90s don't do very well with crunch or higher gain settings. I think about installing a chrome Gibson Burstbucker (humbucker) into bridge position (non-splitable).
Clean sounds are nice but these Tonerider Rebel 90 pickups are a bit strong on the bass side. I tilted them so that the bass side is very close to the body and the treble side is closest to the strings, that sounds ok. These pickups also deliver a pretty hard attack.

It was an experiment and I think they'd do better in a hollow body jazz guitar and played with pretty soft picks. I'm not fully satisfied with the sound yet and I want a more defined sound with crunch settings for dirty blues rock.

Another alternative would be a vintage PAF in chrome (to keep the looks).

Yeah, you could put in a Gibson T-Top - great pickup for crunch/clean and overdriven sounds.

Cheers,
Robin

......how about a set of Hetfield EMG's. Would that give you what you're looking for??

@ZZDoc

EMGs require a battery. I don't think he would put active humbuckers. :|

A suggestion of something in line with what he's looking for. We know how to hide the battery inside the trem rout if he's willing to forgo the middle spring.

There are also LiveWires from Seymour Duncan, Metal and Blackout.

These pickups are most famous for their endorsing pedigree (Dave Mustaine).

Drop & Gains and Arenas from Lace are also a nice alternative.

Not really, I don't use active PUs.

What I'm looking for is a nice crunch/rock tone rather than high output metal pickups.
I have my Ibanez guitars for that.

The Bridge pickup should deliver a nice clean tone as well. That's not one of EMG's strenghtes.

I don't mind having a battery in my guitar, my American Buddy Guy Signatures has one for the active mid boost but I think the EMGs are way overpowered for what I intend to play with this strat.

Additionally I'd like to keep the look of the guitar as it is, which means it's gonna be a chrome covered pickup. I've never seen chrome EMGs, are there any at all???

I don't want to make a heavy metal axe out of this strat, it's used for blues and bluesrock, maybe some rock as well. Not too much gain will be used.
