Hello:

I am new to music and my son is a musician who is new to guitar. We have two guitars between us:
1) American Standard Stratocaster
2) Mexican Stratocaster HSS

We are very pleased with these instruments and are now shopping for replacement strings as part of normal maintenance.

My questions are:
1) What gauge (.009, .010...?) are installed at the factory. We are happy with the factory configuration and want to keep using it.

2) Does Fender have a document that details the string replacement procedure? Can you direct me to it?

3) There are several options in the Fender Bullet string line (Stainless, etc.) What model(s) are most suitable for our guitars?

Thank you for the time and for the help. I appreciate it.

Hi RudyH...congrats to the both of you.As ti your questions i will try and answer them:

1) i bellieve the factory uses standard gauge
2) maybe you can try and use this(<-click) as a manual to guide you how to replace the strings. (refer to page 8 )
3) IMHO for strings its up to the user preference...

i hope it helps in one way or another

Avoid stainless steel strings... they'll tear your frets up really fast, esecially if you like to bend.

I believe the factory uses .009's on both those models. (definitely on the American Std.)

The stock strings are .009-.042. Play around with different manufacturers strings, everybody likes something different. I've stuck with Fender Super Bullets on my Strats, but like Ernie Ball Super Slinkys on my Gibsons. In don't know if there is a specific published procedure but the owners manual and setup guides can get you through it. They here:

I have a MIM and found out the hard way they are issued with .009. When I changed to a .010 my bridge pulled up. Luckily I was able to get it fixed. If you do decide to change the guage have a professional set it up correctly.
