I got an 04 am deluxe recently and have noticed that if I pluck an open string and bend another the open one drops a very noticable amount. I know that the bend tightens the string and pulls the neck/bridge loosening the other 5 strings. I want to know if this is normal for this guitar or if I need to get some work done, or if it is missing something from the factory.

Hey, I have an Ibanex RG350DX that does the same thing, but that's cos it has a Floyd-Rose system. I'm not sure about your Strat, perhaps the bending of the string is something affecting the tremelo system?

You could add more trem springs to stiffen the trem action. You could install a tremel-No or Hipshot Tremsetter. Thridly, you could block your tremolo system.

this has never happened to me, but the problem does make sense. when you bend the string, it is pulling harder on the trem, altering the tuning of all the strings.

do the strings return to proper tuning once you release the bend?

It does this because the bridge is floating (vintage or Floyd Rose). If you don't want it do detune the other strings, you can add springs and tighten the claw on the back so that the tremolo sits flush on the top of the body, but then you can't use the tremolo to pull the strings to a higher pitch (dive only).

Hope this helps!

Some drop in pitch of your open strings is to be expected. It's been 4 years now, maybe a set of new springs could liven things up. I was pretty shocked at how slack the stock springs of my 2007 Am Dlx was. I swapped them out for a set from stewmac.com which had a much higher tension. My trem is still floating but it's action is much tighter so there's less pitch drop and it staps back better.

Oh, I just remembered. Make sure your springs are black. Fender uses a different tensioned spring for vintage and non-vintage instruments. Silver colored for vintage and black for things like American standard and American deluxe.

Naturally, strats that are based off a vintage design like the JV strat would, for example, use the silver colored springs.

This doesn't mean that you can't experiment however!

I never would have thought of this but it makes perfectly good sense to me!

it does not stay out of tune once pressure is released . it detunes as pressure is added and vice versa

Deck the bridge on your Strat and tighten the spring claw. You don't have to add, or change the springs.

You'll still be able to drop the pitch, and whenever you break a string the other strings won't go out of tune.

I've set-up my Strats like this for years and it works. I only use three springs on my bridge and they're the same springs that came with the guitar in '95.

Also thinking that pitch dive during bends and double stops are a weakness doesn't play into the actual strength of the Strat. That's the time to pull on the whammy bar up and wail.
