I am trying to narrow down what strat to get? I am leaning toward the Malmsteen strat, but not sure. I had even thought of an Eric Johnson.

I love rock especially VH, ACDC and also like SRV, Freddie King, etc. Right now I have a Jackson with a Floyd Rose and I would like to get a different style w/out the Floyd.

Any suggestions on which direction to take? I haven't taken the time to hit up Guitar Center to see what they have to sit down and mess with.

THANNKKKSS!

Hello Guitarrawks,

If you think you might like a thicker
neck the '62 hot rod does it for me.
I don't own one---yet, but one day.

Cheers.

The Malmsteen strat is nice from what I heard...but it has low output pickups...and I don't think it is quite as versatile as a Fat Strat, for example.

Me personally, I gotta have a humbucker in the bridge position ;-)

Hey dude, I had the same problem, until I tried the 57 Strat. I have an Ibanez with a Floyd Rose which I use for the heavy stuff, but I'm gonna get the 57 Strat. I think it's the best one you can get (especially with the gorgeous maple necks) I would reccomend it for you.

My understanding is that the Malmsteen model has a scalloped fretboard and is most suitable for playing individual notes fast. It may or may not be suitable for blues type playing that you suggest you may want to do. For example, it may not be a good choice for slides, bends, hammer ons and pull offs.

I am certainly no authority on this, but it is something to inquire about.

That was next thought concerning the humbuckers being near the bridge. I just love the strat style, but wished they made a version that had a little bit more options to it that were rock based?!

Then it makes me wonder do I forget about the strat and just pick up a Jackson? My mind still keeps coming back to the strat. I may check out the 57, it would be nice if I could play around on one at the local guitar center?

If you're used to a Jackson, and like to bend notes and still have low action, look for one with a 12" fretboard radius. I believe the Mexican 'Player's' Strats, and maybe the Eric Johnson have 12" radius neck, and I'm sure there's others. I've been switching between my Jackson KV2, BC Rich Gunslinger, and my AmStd Strat, and I've finally accepted I can't have low action and be able to do full step bends on the high E above the 12th fret with a 9.5" radius....it just physics.

If you like blues you might not like a scalloped neck unless you've already tried one and are familiar with them. They really require a very light touch and a whole new style of mastering.
