I have a guitar that is a 1997/98 Strat. It says "Made in Mexico" on the back. I just had someone tell me that its a "Tex Mex" and its worth more than I thought.

How can I tell if it is? And if it is, whats it worth?

Serial number is MN660369

I have a 2009 MIM HSS Fat Strat purchased for $500 in 2011.
It's modified & upgraded with quality Seymour Duncan pickups.

This was purchased last year, so you can compare with the components & notes below.
My guess is your 1997 MIM if all original and in great physical shape is worth $450-$700.
Lots of factors. Fender's MIM guitars began developing a good reputation during the 1990s.

Mine included the case and the original Tex-Mex pickups as well as the installed
Seymour Duncan HSS pickup set. Compare what you have and what is on the market.

========================
Notes from the Seller:

Barely used 2008 Fender Deluxe Series Fat Strat HSS Guitar (MZ8190374/Mexico)
w/SeymourDuncan pickups & SKB Hardshell Case.
Beautiful black color, classic looking guitar (David Gilmour/Pink Floyd) w/sweet sound!
In excellent mint condition w/straight neck, no nicks, dings, dents, or scratches
Electronics work as new.
Comes with a like-new SKB hardshell case.
Seymour Duncans consist of a JB Humbucker at the bridge,
Classic Stack Plus in the middle, and Vintage Hot Stack at the neck.
The original pickups are included if you really want to go back to them.

Serial number MN6..... is a 1996 model. Probabably worth $300 - $350 Max.

PRC.
Did you get home, property, earthquake or fire insurance on the Stratocaster?

BTW, Serial number MN6xxxxxx = Mexican 1996, so it is worth much more
as an older guitar than your posted 1997/98.

I'd get it insured with a "variable insurance rider" as they go up in value, monthly.

Hope this helps. Toppscore 8)

To be more specific, MN6 serial numbers were used from early '96 to early '97. And the estimate of $300 to $350 is very good. And, although nice guitars, there is not much chance of any MIM Fender increasing in value over time. BTW, the Tex-Mex (if that is what it is) later became the Jimmie Vaughan Strat, albeit with some variations to the design, but still MIM.

DW ~ Smokin' the good stuff.
PRS wanted to know the value.
I wanted to know if it is valuable enough to insure.
And, which insurance he'd get if he'd get insurance.
Should have been more clear for you.

So you mean the 2009 MIM Standard Strat that I bought in early 2010 isn't worth more today than the $500 I paid for it in 2010? I mean they're rare right? They only made what, 20 - 30,000 of them? Can't be that many left around. Darn. Guess I better cancel that $5,000 insurance rider I bought for it last year.
