I am currently repainting my guitar, and was wondering what i should do with the neck... I might get boo'd off this website for mentioning any guitar brand other than Fender but oh well ;) but its a Ibanez Gio (my first guitar) and i was wondering if there are any advantages tone wise for having a bare wood neck...? just wondering because i have heard that in most cases, guitars sound better with less paint, clear, ext... If anyone can help enlighten me on the subject i would really appreciate it :)

Hi Unklemark96: some people take the lacquer off guitar necks and then just leave them bare or oil them with something such as gun stock oil, tung oil or similar.

However, before you do that just bear in mind why that lacquer is on there in the first place. One reason is to keep the wood from getting filthy, which it will do very quickly if it has no finish on it, and in a way where once dirty it can never be properly cleaned again.

However, much more important: lacquer is there to slow right down the process of moisture entering and leaving the wood, which happens when it undergoes temperature and humidity changes with changing weather or the heating going on and off in your house, and also as your sweaty hand travels up and down it. Changes in moisture content are what cause wood to warp, and the very worst place to get warps on a guitar is the neck.

People often get away with unlacquered necks so there is no guarantee that stripping it will cause it to warp. But it is a heightened risk.

Your choice.

Cheers - C

I think you have been listening to the wrong people. If you want your guitar to sound better. Just practice it more. Don't worry about the finish. Play it. Tone is in the Fingers not the finish.

Why do some maple necks feel like plastic, and sticky and others don't?

Sorry Unk mt bad......

Nitro or Poly or ??? Sticky neck - get a white Scotchbrite pad from a hardware store (paint department by the sandpaper) and gently rub down the back of the neck. I prefer a good used one that's not stiff for use on necks. Take that nice gloss finish off with the pad. Don't go down to the bare wood. You only want to put a semi-gloss finish on it.

OR go to the auto parts store and find some 1000, 1500 or 2000 grit sandpaper. Start with the 1000 and graduate up to 2000 to finish. It does not take much work to de-gloss a neck.

First...welcome to the Forums. Even though this is a Fender website, your question is certainly welcome. Second....anything you get from Ceri in response to a question needs to be treated with the utmost respect in terms of its content. He's just 'all that'....and more.
Doc

Thanks for the tips 91Stratplayer, thats what i meant in the first place, was to only take the gloss off of it, not down to legit bare wood, i had played that guitar for quite some time and some of the clear coat had begun to wear off, so i just figured while i h ad it all apart i would try and make the whole back of the neck have close to the same finish, mostly for comfort... and Doc: ive kinda learned to respect the words of the great Ceri, he seems to be a highly valued source when it comes to guitars on here... Thanks again to everyone who pitched in and helped
