I recently picked up a new artist series black Clapton Strat and really am enjoying it....I wanted to know how to relic a strat to make it look like Clapton's famous well worn Blackie that sold for big bucks a few years ago...I just purchased a used regular black Strat and am gathering info on how to relic it...are there any good sites to look at?...has anyone out there reliced a Strat????

Google.com has a lot of information on this subject. Be prepared though, once traveled down this road the guitar is going to most likely be worth less money. Smaller audience of customers want a beat up guitar.

I've done relic treatments on a few guitars now. And I have two points of advice.

One, do the relicing slowly and gradually. You can always relic it more, and never relic it less. So really think about what you are going to do to it, and do it carefully, so you don't ruin the instrument.

Two, beat the hell out of the guitar while playing it. even if you have artificially relic'd it, beat the hell out of it. It will make the artificial wearing take on a more natural appearance if you give it a little abuse.

while some people recommend taking off all the hardware and everything while doing this, I dont think you should, just be careful of it. it is very obvious that it is artificial if you have wear in places that are unnatural. like under the strap buttons. the paint will never wear there, so dont do it. have fun, I hope your guitar turns out the way you want.

Thanks for the info guys...I have been doing my due diligence here and have discovered that a polyester finish found on most of the cheaper Fenders is difficult to work with...I don't want to strip the whole thing...I have checked the various sites and relicdeluxe.com is the best that i have found so far.

Poly finishes are tough. Most home relic'd guitars look really bad. Some guy's take sanders to the, and remove paint in places that it wouldn't occur naturally. But if you think is tough, My 63 Supro is fiberglass with the color molded into it. The only thing that relic'd or it is the neck.

I would just play the guitar to death. If you want to relic one, get something cheap and experiment on it.

I'm not relicing my Clapton Strat...I picked up a used beater in black and am going to experiment on it...I looked up Clapton's reliced "Blackie" in the Custom Shop and will use this for my inspiration! If it turns out well, I plan to put in a set of Clapton's noiseless pickups and then have a great sounding beater to play...

Why would you put "artificial wear" on your beloved axe??? It baffles me why you would take a nice guitar, and make it look old and beat up. It won't SOUND like an old guitar. Play lots of gigs in dive bars, pool parties, smokey clubs, and beer halls and it will happen NATURALLY!

Leave it out in the backyard for a month so the dog can wiz on it and the birds can crap on it. Make sure the sprinklers are on as well. That should beat it up pretty good.

Actually, as I am discovering, the poly finish that Fender uses is very close to INDESTRUCTIBLE!! It will be a long, long time, even with hard playing before any of these newer guitars with polyester/plastic finishes become real relics...

well actually thats not entirely true... i dont mean to piss on parades but truthfully there is not much difference in poly finishes and the nitro fender uses. nitro is a broad term for paints. even fender has different mixes of nitro that they use on different models depending on how they want it to hold up. just because something says nitro or poly that doesnt have a whole lot of meaning. besides that, the polyurethane on the american guitars is not indestructible. ive beat the crap out of my #1 but ive just learned not to let it fall on its neck or frets. you can do damage to the neck and gawge the frets from the strings if it lands that way.:)
