well I just bought a 1997 crimson burst with the lace pickups from the factory. The "lace sensor pickups" were made on fender stratocasters from 1987-1996. check it out on wikipedia.

There were quite a few Fenders with Lace Sensors; the main period was 1987 through 1997 but a couple of models extended beyond that. Supposedly the unmarked pickups on the current version of the James Burton Signature Tele are Lace Sensors under the covers, but that would be the only model still in production.

Here's the rundown of the models and their pickups only; of course these all had other unique features:

Strats
1. Strat Plus (1987-1997) - these had the gold-logoed Lace Sensors

2. Strat Plus Deluxe (1988-1997) - the original version had a silver logoed Laces in the neck and middle position and a blue logo Lace in the bridge position. Sometime around 1989-1990 that switched to a blue logo Lace in the neck position, silver logo in the middle, and a red logo in the bridge position.

3. Strat Ultra (1990-1997) - these had a blue logo Lace in the neck position, a gold logo Lace in the middle, and the "Dually Red" Lace (2 red logo Laces wired as a humbucker) in the bridge position. These also had a mini-toggle that let you select either or both "coils" of the Dually Red pickup.

While some of these were produced into 1998 or even 1999 to complete already placed orders the "Plus" series was retired at the end of 1997 and effectively replaced by the American Deluxe series.

4. HM Strat Ultra (1991-1992) - very rare model that put the Strat Ultra's Lace Sensor set on an HM Strat body with a flame maple top.

5. Eric Claption Signature (1988-2000) - the original version had 3 gold logo Laces. Sometime in 2001 they change to Fender's Vintage Noiseless on these.

6. Jeff Beck Signature (1990-2000) - the original version had 4 gold logo Laces; the two in the bridge position were wired as a Dually Gold Lace (which I don't believe Lace sold separately at that time). Unlike the Ultra the Beck just had a pushbutton to split off one of the two "coils". Sometime in 2001 these changed to Fender's Hot Noiseless pickups.

7. Buddy Guy Signature (1994?-2010?) - the USA Buddy Guy Sig was the Clapton sig with an ash body instead of alder and the trem unblocked. Fender never changed the Buddy Guy from the Lace Sensors. Not exactly sure when it debuted or when it ended; it hasn't been too long since they dropped the model. Not to be confused with the MIM polka dot model.

Teles
1. Tele Plus (1988-1995) - first version as used by Johnny Greenwood; has a blue logo Lace in the neck position and the Dually Red in the bridge position.

2. Tele Plus Deluxe (1998-1995) - same as the Tele Plus but had a trem.

3. Tele Plus version 2 (1995-1997) - has 3 gold logo Lace Sensors in the "Nashville" configuration (i.e. a middle pickup added).

4. James Burton Signature (1990-2008?) - the original USA model had the blue logo/silver logo/red logo Lace set found on the Strat Plus Deluxe on a rear-routed Tele body.

The Tele Plus was also retired at the end of 1997 and essentially replaced by the American Deluxe series. The current version of the James Burton USA model has unmarked pickups that are believed to be still the same Lace Sensor set hiding under unmarked covers.

I'm probably leaving out a couple of short-lived models; I think there was briefly a Tele model that had a neck position Lace Sensor and a piezo bridge and there are likely a few others. However, except for that HM Strat Ultra the other 10 I listed were the main, long-running models with Lace Sensors.

Yes-The Deluxe American Standard (1988-1990) only a few hundred were made (I have one). They were an American Standard, except with a trio of gold Lace Sensors. Nice guitars, especially for recording.

Thanks - where is that head slap emoticon when I need it. I just forgot that one but I should have listed it.

That Deluxe American Standard is one that throws a lot of people - they think it's a modded American Standard when it was really a one-year model from the factory.

This guitar is used for the instance by Steve Winwood. Steve has two of them in black and sunburst.

I have an '88 Strat plus with three Gold sensors.

Did these come with staggered tuners? Mine are not staggered but I was thinking they should be.

Cheers,

I really miss my '87 Strat Plus. It was truly unique. Stripped to the wood, stained golden brown and signed by Stacy Mitchheart. :(

Strat Pluses are awesome!

Holy Cow, John C!!! Great Lace Sensor & Strat Plus history lesson.

Did Fender ever make James Burton signature Telecaster guitars with two pickups
instead of three? or are ALL James Burton Telecasters with three pickups?

They should be staggered - but if I'm remembering correctly the posts on those satin-finished Fender/Schaller tuners were all the same height but the holes for the strings were in different spots on the post - on 3 tuners they were at the "normal" spot but they were lower on the other 3. Unlike Sperzels where the posts themselves are shorter.

Well yes and no. All the USA-built Burton Signatures have 3 pickups (there have only been the two versions of the USA Burton Signature - the originals with the branded Laces and the paisley finishes and the current ones with the unmarked pickups and the hot-rod flames over the paisley finish). The MIM Burtons are traditional 2-pickup Teles.

I don't remember my Fender locking tuners being staggered. It has been a while though.
